Joao Cancelo

Walker is a fantastic athlete but he can’t keep playing 90% of our games. We need options and walker himself will benefit from cancelo coming in. Could add a year or two to his career.

But he isn't very good there.

Only seen him play there for England, looked ok and would improve with coaching.

We see him play there all the time, it's our default set up in posession. Zinchenko/Delph into midfield, Walker + 2CBs as a back 3. 70% of the game is spent like that.

I'm pretty sure Southgate even said seeing Walker play that role for us was why he put him in a back 3 in the first place.

This deal would make City more complete than ever. I just hope we can keep Sané and see these guys work the right flank together, using him to cut inside (Robben-style) while Cancelo provide all of the crosses. I think it's the longterm idea by Guardiola. Obviously the same goes for the other side with Mendy and Sterling. I've been quite harsh when criticizing Walker the past year or two for several reasons (mostly his lack of offensive qualities), but yesterday he was one of our best players. Either way, we would have two great right backs if this goes through!
Instead of sane, it could have the same effect on mahrez who is uncomfortable playing so wide. Allowing him to come inside more often would see him more comfortable and more like his Leicester role.

Pep doesnt trust him thats why he only made 7 league starts there were parts of the season when walker was playing awful yet danilo never played

doesn't trust him makes it sound like he's error prone or unreliable, whereas he's always looked like a solid 6/10 player. it's more that guardiola rates walker higher (probably based on pace and offering more width going forward).

thinking about it cancelo and walker will probably get rotated anyway. but i wouldn't want to see walker dropped against west ham, right after one of his best performances since he joined.

Pretty much yes, keep seeing post that say he was disastrous or not very good in that role for England which apart from a couple of positional errors wasn't my memory of the world cup at all.

If we conceded all possession for 60 minutes against a team with a world class midfield like Croatia's while also leaving 3 forwards up the pitch like Southgate did, we probably would be in serious trouble with him there.

But fortunately, he's never going to have to defend with his back against the wall over and over again for an hour at City.
