Job in Alaska

Blues I have been offered a full time job with the U.S govt up in Alaska (Juneau International Airport to be exact). I need some help. I haven't even ever visited Alaska on holiday, and I don't know anybody from Alaska, so it really would be like moving to another country...again!

Has anyone been to Alaska, and if so what do you reckon to moving there?
Has anyone been to Juneau, Alaska, and the same again?

I realise that this is Off Topic on a Manchester City F.C forum, with a vast majority of users living in the U.K, be it Manchester or elsewhere, however I thought I would give it a shot as this is a huge decision for me to undertake.

I currently live in sunny Florida, and some if not most of you might think it completely bonkers to consider leaving Florida for Alaska. There are many pros and cons to this...

Pros; lowest taxes in the U.S, no state tax (sales tax on purchases), beautiful scenery and outdoors, clean air, higher salaries, high standard of living, long summer days and nights (up to 20 hours or sunlight!).

Cons; remote, cold(although Juneau actually has great climate), high cost of living (rent, petrol, utlities etc.), far away from family and palm trees and in fact anywhere really, Juneau is a very small city with small town feel and only a few luxuries.

There isn't even a road system going into Juneau! One has to have a car ferried there somehow, or be without a car, although being without a car is not advisable.

Anybody still reading? This is a huge decision again, and I am trying to simply get as much help as possible before jumping into this.

never been but i'd bite their hand off, i would love love love to go there never mind live. my first stop after i retire.

Hunting, fishing and drinking, drinking by far the most dangerous
The inuit women are unlikely to tempt you
Sarah Palin is very popular in Alaska, as is religion. You can get eastenders on cable
Grizzly bears can climb trees, alligators can't.
A week lasts a month
On the down side..................
If you go you may regret it for a while
If you don't you may regret it for the rest of your natural
Good luck

Hate religion, but Palin's daughter is fit as!!!!!

You can always go on google maps street level and tour the area to give you some idea of the town , looks quite small to me but could be very nice.

If I told/showed you where I live now, you'd all think I was barmy...

& how close are the nearest pistes for the "shorter" days?

Not entirely sure, but I would imagine not far away with all the mountains around. If anyone has been to Big Bear (Lake) in California, then I would presume it would be just like living there. I do miss skiing a great deal. I have a mate from Stockport who lives in Canada now on a mountain, and works as a snowboard instructor...wouldn't go back for all the tea in China.

There are trains of thought which would have me just move back to England, but that's a completely different story, and one which I am not asking to talk about. So far you have all been extraordinarily helpful Blues. Cheers.[/quote]

who is your mate if you dont mind me asking?

I've heard it's a fantastic part of the world from several people - never been myself though.
