I ran a homeless shelter for a while, based in an old hotel. The genuine cases it was nice to help but for the most part it was druggies, people just out of jail, sex offenders, etc.

I had to deal with fights, thefts, drugs, a stabbing in a room, a fire, a deliberate flooding, criminal damage and a suicide (who I found).

Needless to say, 8 months or so and I was done.
