I still think he needs to improve massively, people who say he's back to his best are wrong and even at his best he still needs to improve a few things.

But he secured us the points today. He made one fantastic save and three others from shots that were going in.

Cheers Joe!

Improve massively? How?
When he runs to the edge of the box there are players waving their arms in the air and he very rarely if ever releases it quickly. That's one thing I really liked about Pantillimon and he is superior to Joe with it. With our fast paced attacking play it is essential that we have a quick release of the ball from the 'keeper and Joe holds on too long too often (did it today and Boxing Day).

His decision making can be very indecisive, causing us problems. Even the other day he should have walked out and claimed that ball over the top where Lescott was backtracking and Liverpool nearly scored (was actually a save by Joe in the end but the whole situation could have been avoided had he just collected the ball over the top.

Conversely, he sometimes comes charging out of his box and not dealing with it a situation. Goals have been scored from instances such as Blackburn at home a few years ago, playing for England with the Ibrahimovic overhead kick, for the Chelsea goal this season and even recently when playing g for England when he took out Smalling and didn't deal with the ball.

His distribution can be inconsistent. Especially kicks out of hand. Against Plzen and today he kicked a fair few out over our players heads for an opposition throw-in.

He's always been a great shot stopper, and even when he was struggling with making big mistakes he was still making good saves.

But there's a long way to go for Joe in my opinion.

One of the reasons you cite is because he keeps hold of the ball too long.

Do you want him to ignore the wishes of the management for him to delay distributions on the occasions that certain players aren't in position, just to please you?

You list other examples of why he needs to improve, but these are all before being rested in which he has been nurtured/coached and mentored. How do you know he hasn't improved on there aspects?

Fair enough if you said he needs to improve, because everyone can, but massively is doing him a huge disservice.

He did very well today and a large part of it needing 5 stitches in his face
He was struggling with the new way we play as a lot of the others were,he has worked on it and has really improved
Why anyone insists on perfection i dont know, they are human after all

BraveHart

Quite simply, without him we'd be 4th looking up at Liverpool not top, looking down at the rest - thanks Joe.
...and yes, I know there's a Hart thread but wanted this thread to salute him.

he saved us all 6 points, but more than that showed true grit and bravery the last two games ( as well as maintaining his professional attitude the past month) - something a few others need to show!

Yep, he should keep his place all season now.

Nice to see he is coming into some form again.
Top marks to MP for how he has handled the situation.
Looks as if all Joe needed was a rest from the limelight and the gaffer has put him back in at the right time.
