Joe Hart (continued)

He made a couple of smart saves last night, which should hopefully help restore his confidence, but the decision to come charging off his line was another error of of judgement.

Regardless I think he should restored to the starting line-up against Spurs, but it's difficult to predict if Pellegrini will do so.

Tough to drop Pants as he hasn't done much wrong....... not much right either though tbh.

Pantilimon has had virtually nothing to do in the games he's played.

The Sunderland goal was not a mistake, but it was possible to do better with, indeed, Hart is usually excellent in those situations.

He also had a very, very, very, very dodgy moment against CSKA coming to collect ball from the air

He received positive praise today in the Mirror today, under the headline 'Brilliant Hart Stopper'.

'Kept England in it with a string of top saves. Magnificent one-handed effort from Per Mertesacker's first header, but had no chance with the Arsenal defender's second. Great stops in the second half from Marco Reus, Mario Goetze and Sidney Sam. He's back.'

Anyone else think that what might help Joe is a bit of consistency re the goalkeeping coach? Yes, coaches come and go and for outfield players I don't think its such a big deal but for a keeper its virtually 1:1 sessions. Pelligrini was always going to bring his own man in and Joe can't demand who he wants but by all accounts he works very well with the England coach (Dave Watson who was also Joe's coach at Birmingham). I'd be going all out to get him on our staff. If you think that Joe started out under Sven he must have had 4 different coaches since then (if you include his time out at Birmingham) who presumably have different training methods. Like I say, probably not that big a deal if you are training as part of a team but for a keeper I'd imagine it matters.

His judgement will improve with games and I do think match play is the best way to hone it. I played keeper regularly for over thirty years; not at anything approaching a notable standard but it does give you some perspective on the role and also how important experience is. My positioning and reading of the game never stopped improving.

I'll defer to you on this one. I've never played in goal ... my brother did. He thinks Hart needs a long rest. But then my brother's a rag!

Interesting. I don't know anything about the Etihad goalie coaching setup. However there seems to be a reasonable consensus that Joe's weaknesses relate to decision-making and distribution rather than shot-stopping. It strikes me that those two aspects are the easier ones to coach whereas shot-stopping is probably more innate and intuitive.

That's one reason why I think we should make very effort to nurture him, because the basic material is very good.

What do I know though? My early attempts at being a goalie came to a predictable conclusion once I shot up to my full 5 feet 6 and a half inches.

He's also been coached by more than one England keeper coach on top, all could be telling him different things.

I also think his gaffs this season are down to how we are set up, where the high line means he's being asked to play a role where he has to come out more, add to that the makeshift defences we have put out, and its little wonder its troubled him.

Its all fine and well people glibly saying "stay on your line", but if the coaches are saying come out, then what is he to do ?

On last nights "mistake", he would have got the ball had smalling not got in his way, (though personally as an ex keeper at a pretty low level) I don't like keepers coming out of the box to head the ball, because it often leaves them stranded, even if they get a good head on it.
