I played as a keeper and coach them at youth level. I have seen very little from Caballero while at City.
In football, the goalkeeper should never have to be called upon because the defence and the rest of the team should be able to deny any opportunities for the opposition. Obviously, everyone makes mistakes and so the keeper is there to act as a safety buffer and be ready to be called upon in such events. Caballero never seems ready. His positioning seems ok on the surface but is obviously not suited to him as he can never get down to reach a ball, it always just rolls past him into the net. He is 6'1 so not exactly the tallest of keepers, yet he never seems to get down to the ball. I cannot understand why. Either he is not positioned correctly or he is just so slow at anticipating a shot that it is always too late.
Both goals today he got beaten by a striker shooting at an angle, neither striker should have been able to net from where they were and where the keeper was. At the very least, both shots should have been parried, if not held.
If you are wondering why I am making the point about his height and speed, let me put it this way. Pantillimon was 6'8, yet he could get down to a ball in a 1/3 of the time it takes this lad. I can appreciate that Pants wanted first team football (which he is not getting at a smaller club) but we should have done everything to hold onto the lad as he was a very very efficient and gifted back up/cup keeper.
At this moment in time, Joe should play every game he can. Once he gets his decision making and command of his penalty area sorted, he will be one of the worlds best. He is still relatively young for a keeper an will start to mature and become an astounding player.
It just pains me to see Caballero make so many mistakes and be beaten on so many occasions where I genuinely believe I could have saved the chance. It is absolutely crazy.
