I remember with a benign smile his manager, also new to Newcastle, explaining that he'd signed Joey because he was a very talented player and he didn't know what Manchester City had done with him, because he, BFS, had always found players no difficulty to deal with. Unfortunately Joey was in jail before he got to play for Newcastle and BFS had got the sack before he got out! A touching story full of pathos and which shows the whims of the fates and the dangers of a big mouth.I prefer to remember him as a former Newcastle United player, especially on that occasion that the Toon fans were chanting “We’re got Joey Barton!” to rib us and we mockingly chanted back “You’re got Joey Barton!!”, the look on the thug’s face as he sat on the bench was priceless…:)
