Joey Barton

He is right about the women commentators to a degree. I watched a game the other day and 3 of the 4 women and it was painful to watch. He Still goes too far though. I was at a game yestrday and debated the women commentary thing and every single person agreed with him and this was just ten mid 40s blokes - all decent fellas. Should be allowed the opinion to say it has gone to far. It’s a very different game the men’s and women’s game.

He's taken it too far, but like you, I agree to a certain point. On the whole it's hard work to listen to. I barely watch the build up now or listen to the supposed analysis at half and full time. I'll distract myself with other stuff at half time. The only one I really have any time for is that Emma Hayes.

I remember a number of years ago when the box ticking started and they were talking to the panellists about playing in the FA Cup Final. They started with Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard and then started talking to Alex Scott as though it was the same thing. I just rolled my eyes. Slightly different to a game in front of a packed 90k stadium and watched by millions around the world to somebody's family turning up and a dog.

Just popping in to say that this? Is why I stopped posting here (this thread came up on a search). Because I am a woman and I am a football fan and according to posters like this, I don’t belong here. Even if I was a City fan, I wouldn’t belong here.

Barton doesn’t have a problem with men commentating on women’s games. Odd, that.

Not defending him, but I'm sure he said women commentate on the women's game and men on the mens game?

Think Joey may have been up at Sunderland yesterday with Agnes Brown and spotted some female pundits...

I don’t mind female commentators. It’s not like Jim Beglin or John Motson ever played at the highest level.

I think Jim Beglin may disagree with you.

I'm not sure what FightLikeAGirl was referring to. I.e panellists or commentators. There's plenty of decent female presenters about and I'm sure there's decent commentators out there too. Panellist-wise aside from Emma Hayes -as I've stated- I find it hard work to listen to.

As you allude to both the commentary and presenting jobs don't require you to be an ex-pro or supposed 'expert'. Most people I talk to have a similar opinion to myself and dislike blatant box-ticking. Worst one for me is that Melissa Reddy that works for Sky as a Senior Reporter on the football. A South African that stutters every time she talks and has a voice like a crow squakwing mixed with a felt tip pen being dragged along a hard surface. Far from impartial too with her pro-Liverpool and anti-City bias. Have to change channel as soon as she comes on as the alteration in decibels kills my ears.

He's not daft old Joey.

He's got a name and he knows if you use that platform he has and be as divisive as possible, you're going to at least gain somewhat of a following. We've seen it with the likes of Andrew Tate etc. There's a career to be had out of dividing opinion like that.

He'll be all over podcasts and whatnot now with people who share similar views, probably gey invited onto TV debates, start his own podcast and whatnot

I'm sure he believes what he says, but i think he also knows its now keeping him in known after football and management.

There's plenty of people out there agreeing with him too, especially those who are tired of "woke" culture as they call it.

No doubt he's revelling in it. The more people talk about him/back him, the more ridiculous he will get.

I will add I enjoy in game commentary less with female commentary. But that's simply probably because we've grown up with male voices doing it, so you get so used to it. Plus I generally think listening to a lower pitch voice for 90 minutes is easier on the ears. But that's simply personal taste. I don't care that women do the job though, it's only talking over a footy game.

As for women pundits, who cares? 90% of the male ones are shite too.

Is a big part of the increase of women pundits and commentary in men's footie to do with ticking boxes? Absolutely but it's the way it is so you might as well get used to it.

I personally think it's brilliant women are getting representation. Please don't be put off commenting on the forum. Everyone's view is welcome on a forum. And don't let close-minded idiots like Barton disabuse you of your place in the game. When people like Paul Merson are considered experts in this field, you're doing just fine. Trust me.
