John Motson dies aged 77

R.I.P,always preferred Barry Davies

With the utmost respect, I have to concur to the above.

But, R.I.P Motty, grew up listening to him on MOTD from the days of Jimmy Hill when they only showed two matches and Bob Wilson had a slot on there.

The Ronny Radford goal is iconic as is his sheepskin coat, but the match that always makes me think of Motson commentating is the Euro 84 Franvce vs Portugal semi final where it seemed like he was losing his voice (PLATINI...GOAL!!!!) as he was so engrossed in the match!!

My personal favourite commentator was always James Alexander Gordon. Got straight to the point.
When he went up to approach the Pearly Gates he'd have known right away if he was going in or going downstairs from the way St. Peter intoned the first syllable of his name.

Sam Matterface is a right tw*t isn't he?

A few tributes were being paid on Talkshite last night, Ratterface contributes and then f*cking makes it about him. Horrible bloke.

Motson remained loyal to the BBC for 47 years, surpassing Barry Davies to become the undisputed choice for big footballing occasions. “With every offer I had, the BBC reacted in such a way that I opted to stay,” he said. “I come from the generation who watched the BBC. It’s my heritage. Working with the BBC is like working for Manchester United.”

Well the BBC and that lot are one and the same…..

Just watched the Motty and Clough video on the Beeb webshite. Clough was a visionary he could see the bias analysis and bollocks in the studio back then.

Very decent bloke but very poor commentator.

Sad news. @Mad Eyed Screamer Don't you have a John Motson story?
Oh go on then....
2007 and I got asked to attend (on behalf of the Football Supporters Federation) the player / manager of the month awards at a Gentleman's Club near Hyde Park / Oxford St, London on a Friday lunchtime / afternoon.
The great and not so great were there.
The 4 national mangers are invited (Laurie Sanchez was there for N Ireland and Venables as assistant England manager was there.
Bobby Barnes for the PFA, Frank Clark for the Managers association.
Amazingly Alan Brazil didn't turn up - unusual for him to miss a free lunch and piss up!

Loads of journos (Harry Harris and Barclay plus maybe 5 or 6 more). They pissed me.off. Sat there complaining that Wembley was taking another year to build and how they hated going.to Cardiff for cup finals. Also complaining that taxis weren't allowed within 400 yards of the stadiums in Germany for the previous years world cup and how they had to walk that 400 yards....... Free flights, hotel, tickets and expenses for food and the poor twats have to walk 400 yards.....
There was a 5 course meal (the last course was brandy and cigars and one of the journos clocked me refusing a cigar and nudged me to accept and to hand it to him....).

And John Motson was there!
When it was time to go I made my way to the Barclay's bloke who had organised it as sponsors of the PL, to thank him. He was talking to Motson and Patrick Barclay. Motson was smashed (wasn't the only one and I wasn't far behind). His rosy cheeks and wide smile. Finally I got to say my thanks and John Motson remarked "lovely to see you again...." of which I politely replied "yes thanks, you too", knowing full well it was our first meeting!
I got the tube to Euston and was asleep all the way home on the train to Piccadilly!

The next evening, still not fully recovered, I settled down to watch MOTD and there was Motty commentating at Anfield!

Hated it when he got the cup final as I couldn't watch it. Awful commentator.

Not the greatest commentator, but a wonderful tone to his voice and a longevity which means he very much will be missed by the footballing world for all he contributed. He always sounded surprised when there was a chance or a goal which tended to elevate the impact of what he was saying but he wasn't particularly interesting or insightful as a commentator. His lack of bias must be commended though and he's far above the wankers we get at the moment.
