He would have benefitted from playing regularly with the likes of Kompany next to him. Ottamendi and Kolorov are not the types of players that are going to bring his game on, hence Pep having to drag him over to the touchline all the time. He has great potential but there are still lots of rough edges.

I thought he was OK, but nothing special, but I was gobsmacked when he was replaced and not one of the other 2.
Criminal bringing on a Clichy, then leaving a yellow carded liability alongside the even bigger liability,it was only ever going to end in tears.

Absolute dog shit yet again. Can't remember the last time he played well.

Constantly getting sucked in too far and turned. Weak. Slow. Takes too many touches - after doing something good he then takes about four or five too many extra controls of the ball when he should just be laying it off to the nearest simplest pass or when he dribbles forward he takes about four or five too many touches n'all.

He's getting worse by the game!

We've all been spoiled with the likes of Andy M, Dave E, George H, Dave W, Tommy B, Tommy C, Vinnie K, and not forgetting Joleoninho. The minimum for me is a hefty, wide, 6ft 4in tower of strength. The kinda guy that makes Costa look like a midget. Johnny S needs a bloody good feed. Perhaps OakieCoakie could give him a few nutritional tips.

Stones has to play every game he is fit for. We didn't buy the finished product we have invested in his future. In an ideal world he would have been playing every game next to Kompany, learning from the best and getting some confidence from keeping clean sheets. Instead we have Pep changing the defence every other game and him having to play with Otamendi and Kolarov. It's far from ideal.

I do think there is a brilliant defender in there. He has the brain for it if you see how he reads the danger and gets back on the line when he knew Bravo was going to get beaten. I'd like to see him put some muscle on and get stuck in a bit more but what he really needs is a reliable defensive partner that he will play with every single week and learn from. Unfortunately that means we have to wait for the next transfer window.

Like mentioned...he needs a Vinny type player next to him...I still think he's class

Do you think Virgil Van Dijk can be that player? He's all the rage on the transfer forum but for all his many qualities, he's doing it next to Jose Fonte who's clearly the leader.

Even Bonucci has never been a leader - he's always had Chiellini and Barzagli beside him.

There are very few of those leaders around.

I think he still doesn't understand when to just get rid of the ball. It comes across as arrogant at times (he wasn't even LOOKING when he cost us the points against Southampton) and it needs to change.

He gets caught out when other people fuck up. That's his inexperience. For the Southampton goal, Sané was not where he was supposed to be so he couldn't pass to him. Kompany was in an awful position, then realised and moved just as Stones was passing. Kompany had never played in a back 3 before and clearly wasn't comfortable with it. It's not arrogance to assume the player you're playing with is going to be where he's supposed to be. Christ if Barcelona players got slated for not looking at the recipient every time they passed they'd be fucking nowhere. Only people desperate to pursue an "arrogant" angle (which has always followed the CB who dares to play with the ball at feet) would accuse him of that over something each player on the pitch does multiple times per game.

The other thing he needs is to bulk up a bit, which will come with age and time in the gym, so he can keep on doing things like fending off Costa while the ball goes out of play.

I see where you're coming from bu we are not nearly at the level where players can assume exactly where the other will be, especially not that far down the pitch.

I'm more than happy to have ball-playing CB's, but that was Stones' mistake, it was very avoidable and it shouldn't be happening at this level.

No, it was a compound mistake, and you're incorrectly placing all the blame on one player.

Kompany and Sané were both out of position in a system they'd never played before. That is to be expected. In my opinion that can be forgiven but passing to nobody can't.

he didn't pass to nobody, he passed to where Kompany was 5 seconds earlier before running out of position.

Not sure why Stones is castigated by all and sundry the media are having a field day with every very minor error blown out of all proportion , he playing at a new club in an unsettled back three or four with a keeper new to the premier league , he is actually our best defender and head and shoulders the best England have got . He is being treated similar to Sterling, is it a coincidence the two most criticised England players happen to play for us ? Delph must be quite happy he's injured all the time at least he isnt getting the dogs abuse Stones and Sterling have endured
