John Stones - 2016/17 performances

I worry for Stones and the rest of our England contingent , week in week out they will be exposed to advanced tactics and thinking from Pep using tactics unseen in the Premier league before yesterday .Then they are exposed to Big Fat Sam and caveman tactics , BFS has already stated that the first thing he will do is teach Stones to defend properly , well thanks for the offer, but Pep wants Stones defending in away that is light years ahead of anything that Sam's brain can comprehend when it comes to football tactics.

Can you imagine how confusing it will be for Hart if he ever manages to get back in.

Pep - "I want you to play it out quickly and with confidence to the man who has the most space around him. I do not want to see you kicking the ball upfield unless absolutely necessary"

Sam - " when the ball comes back to you, look for big Andy or big Harry upfront and aim for them. If you can't see them then kick it for a throw in and we will try and get possession back"

Made me chuckle that.

Like many of the sentiments on here, I will echo that I thought John had a great first game for us. Looked composed on the ball and already showing leadership qualities. I'm really excited to see his progression and if he can stay fit I wouldn't be surprised at all for him to get the most minutes out of our CBs this season.

It's easy to get overly excited after a promising debut, but I'm going to do just that. Stones was excellent yesterday. Calm, confident, looked like he'd been there for years. Most importantly that right hand side of the defensive pairing looks solid without Vinny being there which is hasn't done for some time now. Just like Sterling, in years to come the transfer fee will look a bargain. This kid's going to be our captain one day ...

Going to be interesting to see whether Otamdeni can nail down the other side of the pairing, whether Kolarov really is a serious solution for the rest of the season, or whether we go and buy someone.

Still see us going three at the back mate with John being the one playing in the centre, will give us even more options going forward than a back four.

I see DS and IG both playing when this happens.

Delicious.

We should be fluid throughout the season (we'll see formations switch within games), and yeah we'll see a three plenty of times. Stones though looks class all over. He'll be boss whatever the system.

The cross-field diagonal to right winger from Kola's left-foot is an important passing option to have to switch play - I think he tried it 3 times and was successful twice; With Ota, our play will develop little differently? But yes, physically Ota is far better as a defender than Kola!

With Ota next to him, Stones will hv more responsibility to drive the play. He didnt look out of place at all yesterday, very promising signs.

In what way was he 'shit?'
Hyperbole seems to be in full flow today.
I'm probably too dumb to understand why admitting I was probably wrong about him at Everton without a 1000 word essay late on a Saturday night is hyperbole or bollocks. And I only heard praise and optimism in flow yesterday. Are you guys in need of a hug?

Tugay I was being sarcastic in my posting, but do you really think that exposure to BFS and his limited old style tactics will be a good thing ? I personally would like John Stones to be kept away from that kind of thinking, even if he comes into contact with it only briefly along with the other England players from City,

Kept it simple today, but made his football look effortless. Once he gets more confidence we will start to see the forward runs more.

he was superb but IMO he was at fault for the goal.

I thought so too.

He came out chasing the ball, when there was really no need to.

Apart from that, I thought he was excellent; calm under pressure, winning most of his headers and a great passing accuracy.

If Carlton is worth £100, John more than justifies the £47.5 we paid Everton for him.
