This has gone under the radar a bit but the last 2 games Stones has been outstanding for me. Playing out of position his performances have been superb and in playing him there Pep has inadvertently stumbled upon a new formation for us. Stones isn't going to add that Walker esq bombing down the right flank, but what he does offer going forward is a player who can receive the ball hold it and play penetrating pass. Obviously defensively he gives that extra protection which then releases Mendy up do his lung busting mental runs.
In so many situations when you have team attacking you its generally a 3 (because most team attack in 3's) that ends up as defending whilst the full backing is coming back. When you have the likes of Laporte who can come across to fill in the gap left by Mendy it all makes perfect sense (genius Pep again).
