John Stones - 2019/20 Performances

Smallings wasnt a 50 mil signing and probably is on lower wages as stones and mendy so that'll put teams of. Also good luck trying to convince stones to go to germany.

We don't have to sell them for 50 mil! The point is based on current form, we wouldn't get 50 mil for the both of them, a loan to a lesser league would make them look better than they actually are and teams would be willing to offer a reasonable amount. As for Germany, why not? Top 3 league in Europe plus Sancho's over there and he is doing very well! If Stones is actually serious about reviving his career then he would be jumping on a chane to play in the BuLi or Eredevise.

I think Pep’s team could improve both.

I also think they have and will improve Stones, though, which seems to be a bit of a minority opinion on here.

When can we expect Stones to improve? Year 6, 8? Maybe he'll be good enough to put in a solid performance in his testimonial?

He's had 3 months of form when he was good enough, and it a long, long time ago now. Unfortunately he's just not going to cut it. He still makes the same mistakes as when he was 20.

He's not young anymore either. In 6 months he'll be the age Van Dijk was when Liverpool bought him.

Did you feel the same about Kompany, who also made plenty of similar mistakes?

I think he was immense, personally, but I am also not ignoring them because he is a club legend. Stones being scapegoated means his tend to be continually highlighted and Kompany’s tend to be forgotten.

Agree he has been here a while now and still makes basic mistakes too often, gets outmuscled and is positionally poor. He's okay at carrying the ball out under no pressure though.

You sure? VVD was 27 when he signed for them. Stones is almost 3 years younger?

Had just seen @domalino ‘s edit to his post and was confused by that point, as well.

VD officially joined Liverpool on 1 January 2018, which would have made him approx. 26 1/2 years old.

And VD also makes plenty of mistakes even now, but they tend to be ignored because he plays for Liverpool and thus does not get the same media scrutiny (and Dippers practically worship him like a god).

Yep, born July 91... 26 1/2

Van Dijk was 26. Stones turns 26 in May.
It’ll be a year before Stones is the same age as when VD joined Liverpool, though.

And see my post above about VD still making mistakes even now. I just don’t see how that is a particularly good argument for saying Stones is not good enough.

I am sure you can make a stronger argument and I am happy to hear it — my mind is genuinely open to being changed on the subject with sufficient differential evidence to other supremely gifted defenders that took some time to develop and also continued to make mistakes even after becoming “elite” (e.g. VD and Vinny).

You comparing Stones now, to Van Dijk and Kompany at 25 is just fucking embarrassing.

Stones makes more mistakes in a week than the two of them in a year.
