John Stones

Perhaps that's because the role of the defender has changed into a much more creative and attacking one and rather than scoring down the new wave of defenders on some outdated principles we should come to respect players like pique and boateng are at the vanguard of a new type of defender.

It's the same as when a full back gets slated for not being defensive enough even when that's not the main part of the job now.

It's a difficult balance. But imo a lot of central defenders are fairly shit at actually defending.

The current trend allows them to get away with it. No reason they can't pass the ball & also be great at defending. The two talents are not exclusive.

I'm of the opinion that if both Pep and Josecunt think that Stones has the quality to sign for a title winning team and play first choice (which he would for his fee), then who am I to argue.
Well if I disagreed. I'd argue it. Not gonna change much, but I still would. I did argue against the Mangala purchase. Sure I can be wrong. But so can they.

I personally actually think Stones is pretty good. He reminds me of Gary Cahill with better foitskills. So yes I am for getting him.

Sure it's a risk, but it's frankly not a big one. Less of a risk than Mangala. And yet almost everyone here wanted Mangala. So I'm a little confused as to why there is so much push against Stones.

But seeing as most defenders are shit, why not get the ones with some actual footballing skills.

Note: I disagree that defenders now and days are shit.

You are a bloke on a football forum who might be right. It doesn't make you a better manager, it just means you were right about that one thing.

If you'd told Pep not to sell Eto & sign Ibrahimovic you would have been right.
These people are not gods. They make mistakes. Sometimes the fans see it before they do.

I will guarantee you something & you can bookmark this post & remind me if I'm wrong: Pep Guardiola will sign some players who don't work out.

Which ones neither you, me or Pep know, but it will happen.

As for Mourinho, who was that coke sniffing arsewipe he signed at cf ?

The "Sterling Effect".

If we buy Stones for £40m-£50m then he'll get the same treatment from other fans and the media as Sterling has done and as soon as he puts in a few below par performances they'll all be chastising him.

Truth is, whoever City buy gets shit from other fans and the media unless they're almost perfect, so it doesn't matter on that front whether it's Stones or Laporte, or both.

I had been confused as to why we were chasing so many new center backs when both fullback positions seemed so in need of investment, but I think we will see Stones play RB a fair amount for us next season and beyond. I had read that Pep believes the winger and fullback should never play in the same vertical plane, that is if you have a fullback that plays wide and overlaps a lot, the winger needs to tuck inside more often and provide the midfield with support. Alternatively, with wingers that hug the touchline until the final third the fullback is required to play closer to the midfield.

At Bayern, both Alaba and Lahm tended to tuck in and the wingers were very wide to stretch the opposition, and you would see a lot of quick switches of the ball from side to side. Stones would play very well in that role, although like Alaba he will also play CB often. That versatility would make him a really good fit for us. We may also see the same of Laporte on the left which explains the summer's approach to buying so many CBs and maybe not selling Mangala and hopefully promoting Denayer.
GK- Hart
RB - Stones
CB - VK
CB - Mangala
LB - Laporte
Pivote - Gundogan
CM#8 - Fernandinho
CM #10 - KDB
RW - Sane
LW - Sterling
CF - Kun

Perhaps we could look like this sometimes, and play Clichy or Sagna partnered with Silva on the left or right in the event we want a winger who plays closer to the middle and our fullback to play with more width.

Stones was also not seen leaving the Etihad with the rest of his England colleagues following Sunday's 2-1 friendly victory against Turkey.
