Good post mate, I understand where you are coming from. But the way I read the "vertical plain" thing was that it was interchangeable during a game. So for example if the full back overlaps on the outside, the winger tucks inside. If the winger is wide then the fullback goes narrow. It's not fixed for the whole game.
I think the idea is to create better angles for passes so players aren't stood in a straight line of each other. Playing a ball at an angle means it's easier to control and move in one fluid movement. Also defensively it means you are restricting space for opposing wide players and full backs.
I understand your idea that he could play left back and Stones right back, but I've just watched this video of Laporte playing left of a back 3 and he looks like he'd be an absolute liability at left back to me. He looks too immobile and clumsy on the ball to play as a full back, particularly in a Guardiola team.
I see what you mean about it being interchangable. That makes sense. I still think we may see Stones play in that role however. He is never going to be Dani Alves but he may be able to develop in to Philip Lahm or David Alaba.
I watched the same video, and perhaps I am fucking nuts, but I thought he looked really good! He had a couple of terrible touches especially that hospital ball back to the keeper. In general I thought he was really good at playing the ball to his teammates from difficult positions. I am really excited to have him, but I am already dreading the response from the fans when he makes errors that lead to goals. I think any defender who is going to try to keep possession is going to have them and while it will cost us some games, I believe that over the course of a season that approach wins more points than it drops.
Where's our width coming from with a centre half at RB and a left footed RW? Guardiola loves his width.
I think Sane can continue to play wide though he is left footed. But maybe in that sense he swaps with Sterling or they play a different winger on that side. My real point was that we could easily see Stones and Laporte getting games as fullbacks as well as at center half and that is likely why they are so coveted and why we have not been linked with fullbacks.
