How a defender looks depends so much on how the manager sets the team up. Martinez, like Pellegrini, seems to like his defenders to be on the front foot and intercept everything and play the ball. Stones has talent and it will be interesting to see him in a different set up. Not sure id gamble on him being any better than Denayer at this point.

Stones is similar to Kompany. He is fantastic on the ball, calm, reads the game well, can make a good first pass but for all these reasons sometimes he is over confident about himself. He is like Kompany, he thinks that he is more than just a centre back. Defenders who are not good enough they do everything in a simple way but Stones knows that he is good and he wants to show that in a more fancy way.

I agree he's better at CB but if we only have 4 spots for CBs i'd rather have Denayer back. Granted if he is up for sale, i'd rather him here than a rival.

To be honest it's a poor excuse. The mistakes that he makes are absolutely diabolical. His clearance against West Ham went straight to Lanzini and he scored. His jumping over the ball against Barnsley, ran over to Aguero and leaving Navas to equalize, played a weak pass back to Howard in the last premier league game that resulted in penalty and today's shambolic display. These are just some of the examples.

He is young defender making mistakes on a regular basis, he should learn as he develops but nowhere near the level he is being touted at.
