Went on the Sunderland message board to find out about Defoe's injury, and found 150 comments in a thread entitled, "Would John Stones get in our XI?" and the overwhelming view is that no he wouldn't and he can't defend.

Jack Rodwell got into that team

I hope you do not mean that. The opposite is true. They showcase a player, and for football fans they are a brilliant tool especially for overseas players who you have never heard of.

Imagine that we were linked with Leroy Sane, or Gabriel Jesus in the 1980s. We wouldn't have a clue.

They are not perfect. Players like Samaras can look good against weak opponents, and they maybe very good at one thing which they do again again and again, but if you watched them closely enough, and critically enough, you might pick that out.

In the 80-ies and before we had the Pink Final.
And we didn't need a You Tube highlights movie when we got Kazi Deyna in. Than again, maybe we should have had You Tube than.

Truth is he probably wouldn't get into their team because their captain Paddy McGuinness is as solid as a rock and Stones' tippy tappy European bollocks would only hold them back in their quest to finish 17th every season. Proper club.

I was at the reserve game when Uwe Rossler played whilst on trial. I think he scored 2 and showed all the potential RE what he would go on to become. You would never get that now – an Eastern European international player coming over for a trial with no one even having a scooby who he was. Same with Kinky – bought a few years before with no one having seen him kick a ball!

RE Stones – I’m not sure on him. If you could merge the best bits of Mangala and Stones you’d have the best player in the world but if you merged the worst of the pair of them you’d have a Sunday league player!

Expected comments about the fee - not his ability as a player. A load of Evertonians rubbishing him - must be on there because of Moyes. Fans always do this: You sign a player, he's brilliant, wait till you see him. You sell him. "He was rubbish". But Sunderland should be neutral. I think it reflects the bad press he has had over the last 12 months and Everton's defending as a team. That for me was entirely down to Martinez.

Think the multiple signings of Petrov, Elano, Garrido, Corluka and Bojinov was one of the most exciting days as a Blue, after the dour fare served up in the Pearce era.

Elano would have been a star nowadays. Granted he could be lazy as fuck but he controlled a game from RB.
