John Stones

Has there been confirmation of an unsuccessful bid?

£40m seems like a fair valuation in today's market, and one would think that both parties would be satisfied with that fee.

There may be as many examples of players we didn't overpay for and were proved right. I can't think of any but there might be. I trust the club.

I don't think the issue is overpaying as such. Its saying "this is our final offer" (if that's what we have done) and then caving in and paying full whack. If we're prepared to pay £50m for Stones then fair enough. But if we have said £40m is our final offer, then we shouldn't up it by more than pennies.

Everton were said to have turned down £40M from Chelsea last year since when prices have gone up because of the TV money and Everton have apparently got richer owners. I can't see the fee being much less than £50M if one is agreed, whether or not he is worth the money only time will tell. We've certainly shelled out big money for center halfs in the past from Lescott to Mangala.
It was less than that, and he had a bad season. I think you have to have a degree of good faith to the player after he's you an extra 12 months. Kenwright had 12 months to sort a replacement out. Asking for £50m for the player is unreasonable

£38M was the figure that was quoted which realistically would have gone to £40 if negotiations had started.
I don't think reasonable has a lot to do with it we paid an unreasonable fee for Mangala and Lescott . The fee will be what it will be, or not if we don't play ball, what you or I consider reasonable will play no part.

At what stage does stones throw in a transfer request?

Hi mate, He's already told them he wants to leave, I not sure a official transfer request would do any more to help push the deal. It was reported that he put in a transfer request last summer, when Chelsea made 3 bids for him and Everton rejected it..I guess the only way this gets done is if we somehow agree an add-on package similar to that of Sane. (maybe 40mil + 8mil add-ons?) If Stones triggered those targets for the add-ons, it would likely mean, he's proven his worth anyway.

I don't think that's fair. Stones has told Everton he wants to leave, and that City are the team he wants to join. He can't really do much more. It's not for him to dictate the price, that's for the two clubs to resolve.
There's another way of looking at it. Fernandinho apparently gave up a loyalty bonus he was due to ensure his transfer to us went through he was that set on the move.

I'm not suggesting Stones gets a placard made and forms a picket picket line outside Finch Farm and goes on strike, but if was to apply constant friendly pressure on his current bosses for them to be reasonable about the price quoted, it would soon start to sink in that they are in danger of having an unmotivated want-away player on their hands which would do their squad harmony no good.

Stones should also tell Everton that if the transfer falls through because of their high valuation, that he will no longer be committed to a future at the club and will just run down his contract, OR he would want a wage increase in-line with that of a £50m player. That would soon clear the nostrils of Everton's hierarchy.
