John Stones

We shouldnt be paying £50m for a defender whose weakness is defending. He might have a silky touch, find an intricate pass etc, but fundamentally, he needs to be able to defend . Gen question to all those who say he has all the attributes that Pep needs, do you rate his ability to defend?

I wouldn't say defending is his weakness...that's something you'd say about yaya, not stones

However he does need to improve his defensive attributes

In short, I think Billy's saying that Everton should 'put up or shut up' but won't, in his opinion, be doing the former anytime soon

This was Billy's post I responded to. If you feel that this is what he is saying, I have no idea how you reach that conclusion

You're looking at this backwards. Did you read Pep's words about why he likes midfielders in defence? Those sound like the words of a man who thinks that the most important attributes on a defender are their defensive attributes?

It's not up to you or me it's up to the manager what kind of player he wants. And it's crystal that he wants Stones.

That was my other post about Everton in general. The point I was making to @mosssideblue was simply that whatever his personal opinion might be of the defensive qualities of John Stones he is clearly a player who Pep wants. Coupled with Pep's recent comments about how he likes midfielders in the back four because of their passing ability and also general ability on the ball it suggests that being a top defender (which Huth and Morgan were for example for Leicester last season) isn't the top priority for Pep when choosing which defenders to sign. It was related to the question he posed at the end of his post where he asked "do you rate his ability to defend?". Shame he couldn't make sense of my post though as I'd be curious to see what his answer would be.

I'm getting there :)

I fully understand that pep rates the lad and hence why we are still in a debate with Everton. Irrespective of how neat and tidy we are at the back and how slick we are in passing the ball around each other bringing it forward, there will always be a need for defenders to defend.

My comment about we shouldn't be spending £50m on a player who (IMO) does not have this as a strength remains as having all the best ball players in the world on your side is all well and dandy when you have the ball.

I'm old school and still think defenders should be able to defend

It's not really relevant whether you're old school or new school. This is Pep's school so we should readjust our own expectations both of what types of players we'll sign, and the type of football we'll play, based on what we know of him. We should also, IMO anyway, trust the man. At least for the next 12 months. Clearly we're in for Stones, so whatever your personal opinion of him, making out that he can't defend and that we'd be wasting 50 million on him is IMO short sighted and isn't really giving the lad a chance. Maybe he'll look a better defender in Pep's system than he has at any point previously.

The key thing though is that this isn't a tenuous link to a player we might sign. This is a player we're actively trying to sign who if/when we do sign him will be the cornerstone of our defensive system. So we should look at him through the eyes of our manager and see what qualities he sees.

I have no qualms with your post. What I would suggest though, tnat even with Peps style of play and what he expects of his defenders, I,m convinced, the ability to defend will be a requisite. My view on JS ability to defend is simplky, my view. I,m sure some will agree and some wont, but lets not pretend ( not aimed at you) that Peps style negates the need to defend properly.

Forgive me if this is old news but apparently Everton fans are getting excited as Bony is in Liverpool now.
Maybe some movement is afoot re Stones
