John Stones

Bit weird we're signing these top players and they're gonna be playing in those shit kits all year

It's the sound I most hate in football: the oohs and aahs of doom merchants when the ball is passed around at the back. This has held back English football for decades and I hear shouts of "Get rid!" at kids' matches every week.

Hopefully, Pep will change this attitude for ever in this country and Stones will help him to do it.
Yep. Fuck getting the players to buy into his vision, the fans will be harder to win over. A couple of mistakes at the back and the knives will be out!

We'll find out this season. I'm in the 'he is' camp. Also I think Kompany confidence when on the ball has taken a serious hit the last 2 years. But know one likes to talk about it.

Far superior on the ball, that won't be his problem... Kompany has that brilliant quality of being a leader, if it rubs off on stones then he'll be very special. Kompany is also outstanding at reading the game...

Watching the new Inside City of Stones's first day makes me like him even more. So down-to-earth and humble. He's destined to be a fan favourite. Anyone who hasn't seen it, I'd recommend checking it out on the YouTube channel. If you're unsure about his personality this video will probably change your mind.

Thanks for that, just watched it and you're right. What a down to earth guy and for his age he's brilliant with the kids. Most players will do it but you can tell it's a grind for them, he really seemed to take pleasure in giving those few minutes to make a kid's summer holiday.

Is it just me or has he put some pretty serious size on over the summer? Used to be built like a twig looks to have bulked up well

Stones also has that innate leader quality. He oozes it. I have been in the minority on this one but I don't think Kompany's reading of the game is outstanding. I think at his athletic peak, he was so dominant that everything else just worked effortlessly. In the last 2 years or so, his game reading has been ok. Not exceptional. I don't rate the current Kompany as highly as most do. I reckon most often conflate the 2010-2012 Kompany for the current one. I differentiate btw the 2. I thought the Kompany of 4 years ago was the absolute best defender in the world and only had 1 equal in Silva. The current Kompany I don't think of as a top 10 CB. Just a good CB who cant stay healthy.

A healthy kompany is the best defender in this league, I'm pretty confident if he comes back strong from this injury, he'll still be the best. He was brilliant before his injury last season.

You're measuring kompany on a ravaged couple of seasons, granted its all you can do, however, to suggest stones is a leader of the same magnitude is a little silly.. Kompany has experienced Gallipoli, big horn, Waterloo (I know, poor examples) and led his troops through adversity to victory. I'm not saying stones isnt able, but displaying it at the very top end is what marks out the truly world class... Kompany anticipation of the ball is brilliant when he's fully fit, it drives a team forward, will he be able to replicate it?? Who knows but he'll give it his all trying....

What I will say about stones is his fearless attitude, for such a young lad, is going to be exciting... There's no reason that within 2/3 years he can't be one of the best in the business!!
