Our defenders need be able to receive the ball under pressure, having adjusted their body shape as the ball is travelling to them whilst having accessed the onward pass such that it can be played at very least on the 2nd touch but preferably the 1st. Why? ...because all success in sport is based upon accessing space at speed and our defenders need to be able to maintain our speed of passing and not leave us vulnerable to a press. Unfortunately for John Stones he never looks comfortable on the ball and seldom plays 1st time due to poor body shape and situational awareness. His lack of awareness can be best summed up by watching his performance in the Carabou Cup Final v Villa when his falling over his own feet resulted in a side normally incapable of mustering a shot managing to score a goal.
