If it turns out as Iexpect it will then Terry will have just done the exact same as Gerrard did a few years ago - his image amongst the red scouse is probably as high as it has ever been

Mmm true. I seem to remember it did not drag on as long though and the vibes always were he was not interested. Where as the vibes here have always been hes very interested. Also at the time Chelsea were winning everything and getting to champions league semis etc. Liverpool were no where in terms of winning the league. So I dont think its comparable.

This has been going on for 3 weeks and he has said nothing. His reputation amongst rank and file football fans has also suffered IMO due to the way he has handled it. Sure many Chelsea fans will aceept him back with open arms but this has really messed up their pre season and you could argue distracted from getting any other transfer business done.

Whatever happens no there are no positives for CHelsea their fans must realise this.

Yeah it has gone on a lot longer than the Gerrard affair but that went further where Gerrard handed in a transfer request which Terry hasnt as yet. I think the key for Gerrard was that after he stayed he went on to win the Champs League.

If Terry stays and then goes on to lift the Champions League then I think this episode will be forgotten

Us football fans are fickle. If, as I expect, Terry stays at Chelsea with an improved contract the Chelsea fans will no doubt think he is the best thing since sliced bread and take the piss out of us.

If Terry was 2 years younger or had won the CL then I reckon the chances of him coming to us would have been greatly increased.

I think their chances of winning the champions league are slim. The have some very good players but its an ageing side and there does not seem to be much cash for team building.

Another new manager as well and a few long term injurys to Cole etc. 3rd in the league again and knock out stages of the champions league maybe a domestic cup cant see anything else from Chelsea next season.

I asked this question when the thread began, and I asked it a few more times shortly thereafter.

Does anyone know if Terry has a release clause his contract?

"Release Clause is a clause in a player’s contract which sets a minimum fee that a club must bid in able to buy that player. If a club bid’s the minimum fee set in a player’s contract in an initial payment, his club cannot block the bid and must allow the bidder to talk to the player. Players with a minimum fee release clause can still be sold for less that the set fee, at the club’s discretion."

Anyone? I can't find anything.

This from the 22nd.

Conference was over and I headed to the player mixing area. Lampard had no comments but I had a chance to introduce myself to the Captain John Terry who was kind enough to sign autographs and have a few words with me. I got right to the point with my question:

Q from Alex Bogatiryov – Soccerlens.com: “John – are you going to Manchester City?”

A: “I promise that I will let you know in a couple of days…”

<a class="postlink" href="http://soccerlens.com/john-terry-on-manchester-city-move-i-promise-that-i-will-let-you-know-in-a-couple-of-days/32251/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://soccerlens.com/john-terry-on-man ... ays/32251/</a>

edit: I know this "promise" was mentioned on here at the time, but someone might have missed it. It seems clear now that Terry wasn't being literal when he said "couple".

I was just about to say its end game time. Their manager has painted him into a corner. They cant go into their final UK preseason fixtures with him still sitting on the fence.

I expect him to go public when they return from the US tour in the next couple of days...

Hughes only wants top quality

July 26, 2009
CITY boss Mark Hughes does not intend to settle for second best in his bid to sign defenders if moves for John Terry and Joleon Lescott do not come off.

The pair have been on the radar of the Eastlands outfit all summer, with their respective clubs, Chelsea and Everton, already turning down several attempts to land their signatures.

Hughes said he is only interested in bringing in players better than those already at the City of Manchester Stadium.

"We're in the market for good players that we think will improve us," he said. "If we can bring them to the club, then we'll be very delighted.

"But a lot of the good players out there are at good clubs and clubs that don't have to do business with us.

"It's a case of saying what's available, what we can bring to the football club to improve. If the only players that are available are players that won't improve us to any great extent, then we go with what we have.

"Because it doesn't make sense to bring players in that are at a same level, we need to bring players in that are at a better level."

Terry has looked like the prime target of Hughes all summer and asked whether the silence over the issue by the England captain had convinced him even further that the player would be interested in a move, he said: "I have no idea.

"John Terry is a player not at the club, who I keep having to answer questions about. We made a bid for a player that was rejected and that's where we stand at this moment in time.

"Irrespective of what his club does or what John does, we can have no influence on that and that's where we are really."

He continued: "There's been a lot of speculation and debates over a lot of things in connection to Manchester City.

"I've said before, last year expectations were too high for us to fulfil. This year we hope to do better in that respect, we hope to obviously have a squad of players that will compete and do very well.

"Every manager has an expectation on them and I'm no different from any manager in the Premier League or South African football. The pressure is always there to win football matches and we live with that on a daily basis.

"Maybe last year I lived with that more than most, but I'm quite comfortable with that as an expectation. It's something that we deal with quite regularly and it doesn't worry me unduly. It's part and parcel of being a football manager."

Anyway that Hughes interviews says to me the likes of Nedum and Dunne will be staying, sounds like he is trying to moderate expectation surely we will only get 2 of the 3 defenders we are after in the end.

Assuming Terry stays Chelsea will still be one of the top 4 sides in Europe. The 2 teams who did better than Chelsea in the CL were Barca and Scum. The Scum have been weakend beyond doubt with Tranny leaving (could be as many as 40+ goals) and Chelsea were cheated out of their semi to Barca.

I'd still say they will be there or there abouts in the PL as well.

if this is the case then im not best pleased to be honest. Every man and his dog knows that the weakest part of our squad is the defence, therefore we should have been going all out from day one to get the best defenders in, before we got for more attacking options

Rubbish you can only take players when they become available, should we have said no to Ade coming and waited untill we signed a defender?
