Jon Macken

I went to school with Johnathan (St Matthews), he was a year above me. His sister used to knock about with us on Briscoe Lane, when we were kids. Now him and Ronnie Wallwork were exactly the same age. I know Ronnie through him knocking about in Newton Heath.

Growing up, those 2 were absolutely head and shoulders above anyone else at football. It was not even close. I thought they were both on course to be superstars. In the end, they ended up being decent lower prem/championship level players. Ronnie should have been so much better but other factors impeded him. Some his own fault and others out of his control.

It makes me laugh when people call players shit. To make it to the top level then you have to be ridiculously good and super dedicated.
I played in the taverners league in buxton.
Thought I was pretty good.
Played against my mate once who was in the youth team and reserves at bury once.
He stood out like a sore thumb.
I play now on a Wednesday night for mens mental health at buxtons ground some lads play who played for buxton they stand out aswell

He wasnt really a signing we needed at the time and the big transfer fee may have been better being invested elsewhere in the summer after promotion.
Goater and Huckerby were scoring regularly, Wanchope was with us at the time and we signed Anelka in the summer then Fowler the following spring. Realistically he was never going to be regular first choice once we were promoted although he did have injury issues. Used to see him occasionally around North Manchester pubs and he came across as a decent lad so hope Stalybridge job goes well for him. Winning goal in Tottenham 4-3 and derby goal in a 4-1 win his high points as a player with us.
Yeah, Macken was a slightly odd signing at that time...especially so late in the transfer window when we looked like we were going up anyway.

But 1) comes across as a sound local lad
2) his goals v Bradford on debut (had a top night), at Spurs in the cup and in the derby mean he wouldn't need to open his wallet/phone app in a pub with me.

Always think of the spurs game when seeing his name. And obviously Pearce putting a keeper upfront while he was sat on the bench. Typical Pearce
