Its hard to talk about what we have missed out on player wise since the takeover when it comes to defenders. Sure when we first signed Kompany we got a CDM cheap bargin that turned out to be a world beater. But the people we have tried to partner him with over the years has been mixed. Boyata, Nedum, Richards, Boatang, Savic, Garcia, Toure, Lescott, Demachelis, Ottamendi, Mangala and hopefully the best of the lot Stones. One player who was on my radar for years and my pals who I stand with in the South stand will back me up on this is Hummels. There was a time we could have got this guy on the cheap but obviously did not. Crazy in my opinion as he has always been class. Now obviously that ship has sailed and he is around 28-29 so not what we are looking for now but I honestly wonder why through all those years of recruiting the 12 players I mentioned above why he was not one of them.

And Nastasic. I think part of the problem is that Roberto, Manuel & Pep have different requirements of centre backs.

I am sure that they do/did but they all seemed pretty damn happy with Kompany. Granted he is world class, IMHO so is Hummels but at no point since Hughes to Pep can I remember us having an interest even though we could have until quite recently signed him easily. Which makes me think why?

The RagDipperArseHaringeyMeedya will all say it's a good signing 'cos they want us to go belly up! I'm surprised they haven't suggested we resign Bernardo or The Gorgeous Greek, and 'tis a pity St. Joseph of Barton is banned or he would add some steel to the midfield!
I think it's more to do with the fact that he's a good old British player who they know well. Our football media generally have a huge bias towards British players and managers.

Hummels imo, would guarantee us missing the title.

We have only had 3 decent cbs imo. Kompany, Lescott & Demichelis for half a season. Lescott only suited Mancini's style, then Mancini decided to change his style (end of Mancini).

The rest of the time the cbs have been average to shit. Or moreover, Otta/Stones average, Kolo/ Mangala occasionally average, the rest, to a man, complete & utter fucking dogshit and nowhere near even close to the level required.

I think it's down to all 3 managers having the same weakness in different ways, ie: they just aren't great at picking central defenders.

fuck me.
you go away for a few days and return to 400 pages about jonny evans.

not much point in commenting, no doubt it's all already been said and re-said,
but i'll take a wild guess this news hasn't gone down too well will some, haha.

Jonny will enter the hallowed column inches of the RDAHMeedya in the same way as Scotty, Adam and Jack. They were fine at X, Y or Z club. The second they sign on the dotted line for us they become the Devil's spawn and they have sold their careers for a mess of pottage!

Without a doubt.

Bit harsh. I thought Nastasic was ok in his first season especially considering his age. But trying to operate in Pellegrini's system did for him. Mind you even Kompany looked dreadful a fair amount of the time in that system. I use the word system fairly loosely.

He was twice the player & part of the best cb pairing we have ever had at City. We have never even come close to replacing him & it will end up costing a billion.

Barry is nowhere near Fernandinho as a footballer, just better at defending space, at which he was the all time best. Fernandinho is better at literally everything else & 4 yards faster.

Lescott benefited from the defensive wall set up in front of him and the way we played. Mangala would have thrived in that Bobby Manc team. He was not a good footballer.

As for Gaz Baz and Fernandinho. Fernandinho maybe quicker and more mobile that Gaz Baz but that's all he has on him. Gaz Baz may have been slow on foot but he was quick in head. He was better with the ball and far more intelligent. Fernandinho has gone hill imo since the World Cup.

It was a system that won us the title in his first season.

I thought he was a complete fraud & looked 'good' because he basically didn't do any defending, at all, just picked the ball up if it happened to drop where he was stood.

Proper 'stat's defender. 50 free headers & loads of 'interceptions' of fresh air. We keep signing blokes of moderate strength, with no pace.

I thought Mangala might be the one, but nerves seemed to get the better of him. What we need, is a 'good' Mangala. Then we are sorted imo.

Accrington to some on here who believe every word these hacks come out with Johnny is an excellent piece of business.
You watch the ****s turn if he puts pen to paper

barry was absolutely not better with the ball than Fernandinho, he kicked mostly sideways or diagonal with one foot. The best ever reader of a game, average footballer.

Lescott hardly ever got beat by anybody anywhere.

When he did a bunch of ****s on here who had it in for him, hung him on every single occasion, but it was so infrequent, even they were short of ammo, until Mancini fucked the system up with a back 3, which hardly any of them could play & effectively blamed Lescott, but then had to sack it off, without Lescott.

I remember him changing to it one game v Wigan & they ran fucking rings round it so he changed it back.

He was only a kid really. I never bought into the hype but I thought he was ok and had the potential to improve. Someone genuinely quick would be good, it's pretty clear that dealing with quick forwards on the counter attack is our main issue domestically at least. Evans doesn't really help with that and we can't always rely on the full backs to help who will presumably be at the other end of the pitch.
