Jonny Evans

I think it's a safe assumption that Pep knows what he's doing better than anyone on here. If Pep rates him, then that's fine by me. I thought Delph was gash tbh and now look at him.

I think the majority on here think that JFE is rather turd-like, and Pep could get the Duraglit out and polish like fury but underneath . . . . . . . . . . .?

It doesn't make the answer Jonny Evans though. It's unjustifiable to spend £30m on a guy to take us to the summer and then want to flog him at half-price (why would he leave?), we'd be stuck with him for 2/3 years. It has to only be players who can challenge and improve the first-team and who we would want to start for the next 2/3 years. We don't need, nor have any room, for more HG players without eating into valuable foreign slots, so if we're going to buy, it needs to be top class and players have to fight and compete for the spots, and the loser gets sold.

That’s not how I read it. If we buy Jonny Evans, then he will be Pep’s 4th choice CB for the foreseeable future and we will buy another top class CB in the summer who will be vying to be first choice with Ota and Stones. Mangala and Kompany will make way in the squad.

The 4th choice CB should be whoever loses out of Ota, Stones + 2 new top-class CBs, or a youngster, not a 4th choice CB bought for the job. If whoever loses gets miffed and wants to leave, we buy the best available and start the process again. Stacked squads win the big honours, as Real have found out this year if you start buying squad talent and youngsters without keeping the competition for places genuine in the squad, you drop off significantly.

I know fees have gone mad lately but 30 million for a 4th choice player is madness imo.

Despite what some say in here JFE could do a short term job for us - but it would be very short term and a stupid waste of £30m. For all we have to be grateful for Kompany simply cannot be relied upon and needs to be replaced - and replaced properly - if we can’t get a decent target now we should think twice before blowing £30m on JFE - there are others whom we could buy now and at least sell on later for a percentage of what we pay. If we buy Evans he will get a huge salary uplift and no one will touch him with a barge pole and we’ll be stuck with Wayne Bridge Mark II

The last I checked, we had a senior squad of 21-ish, so difference would JFE make?

30m plus personal terms is a shitload of money to pay "to get us to the summer" AND he isn't someone once a contract is signed we will be able to move on he will want a 4 year deal and Danny Mills parking spot for the whole time.
I never said he was a signing until the summer, I said he & Sanchez would see us through to the summer, where we can recruit again.

We need a permanent replacement for Kompany, so if we did get JFE now, he'd become 4th choice next season with Tosin being able to be eased in.

We also need a permanent LB, a DCM, a right winger & a left winger. Once we achieve this over the next 3-4 windows, we'll then be set going forward for 2019 - 2020, which is when I've always said we can truly begin to judge Guardiola.

Hey, Johnny Evans is up for sale...........

If he gets us to the chumps final or we even win it then it would be 30m well spent. Dont think Pep cares that he supported and played for the rags.

Has this just been bumped because the transfer window is around the corner or has something been said?

I think most people that don't want this signing also couldn't give a toss he played for the rags, it's more the fact he will be expensive to buy, looking for a long term deal on premium money AND 30, I don't blame the player or West Brom I just don't think we should be pissing money away on something that at very best is a short term solution and one that still puts us over the barrel in the summer if we are looking for a long term replacement for Kompany(which we should be)who he is only 20months younger than.
