Jorginho

Regardless of your opinion of Jorginho (and Mahrez), isn't it just a bit disappointing that we're going for players that aren't of a high enough standard to remove any argument whether they're good enough for us or not?

Everyone would be getting giddy on here if we were close to getting Hazard and Mbappe, for example, or if we'd got Fabinho. Yet the targets the club has identified are dividing opinion, which isn't the best sign.

I just wish we would really go for it from such a position of strength in terms of our dominant season, manager and financial clout. But we're spending on players you'd expect Spurs or Arsenal to look at, not a team with genuine CL winning aspirations. That is disappointing in my opinion.

I don't think there is any doubt that Jorginho is good enough for us. Not among people who have watched him.

Also if you think we aren't going for it then you're not living in the same world as the rest of us, because as far as I can tell, after posting the best single league season in PL history, we've gone out and are days from signing the best midfielder on the market for Pep's system and a PFA Player of the Year winner and it's not even June yet.

Im not talking about Napoli as a team my friend I’m talking about Jorginho and he isn’t the player we need we need a player full of energy similar to dinho Jorginho isn’t that guy imo

I’m glad you put ‘imo’ at the end as our manager, along with 99% of the board, trust his judgement..

A good team, which Napoli are, apply the press just fine as it happens, however a great team, which we look like becoming, controls the tempo. This player is exactly what we need, not a fecking energiser bunny. Our press, if you haven’t noticed, is applied in 3/4s on most occasions, this guy actually frees up those numbers due to his reading of the game, thus we are on the front even quicker....

I don’t think many on here have seen that much of Jorginho (myself included), but Mahrez was POTY not so long ago.

In my view, signing someone like Fabinho would be no more exciting than securing a deal for Jorginho.

A high-profile signing isn’t always the best way to go. You should look no further than the likes of Veron, Pogba, Sanchez and Morata to see that it’s not that straightforward. It’s identifying the right player with the right attitude for each team’s respective set-up. Liverpool did that with Salah, Dijk, Mane, Firmino and Chamberlain, and we did it with Sane, Ederson, Walker, Sterling and Bernardo. With the possible exception of van Dijk and Walker, none of those were recognised as top class players at the time of their transfers.

Moreover, with the exceptions of their achievements and notoriety in the game, I don’t see a significant difference in quality between Hazard and Mahrez. Both are fantastic players.

He also moves the ball ridiculously quickly. When the ball goes into him 9/10 times he immediately, with no hesitation plays a 1 touch pass if it's on.

When we play at our full speed no one can keep up, we just cut through teams, and Jorginho is going to both make that faster and happen more often.

The same skill is why he negates teams like Liverpool, because it doesn't matter how many players press or how quickly, he's going to move it on before you get near him, and if you try to mark his targets instead, he's got time to ping balls over the top with an accuracy and incisiveness that Fernandinho doesn't have on tap. Fern has delivered those passes, but they're highlights not a regular, more often than not occurance.

Bravo hasn't gone anywhere last I checked.

You'd also have to seriously question any player who'd be happy coming in as 4th choice for his position, and Pep/Txiki for wanting another player in that position. Fernandinho and Jorginho are going to play 95% of games there, Pep's shown he quite likes Gundogan there, why would you come to City to sit behind them? Why would Pep cram the squad full of too many defensive midfielders?

Got a Feeling Freddie Mercury may bite the dust...

Quality post this - nail on the head.

Not sure how Fabinho is anymore exciting than Jorginho - it's players for our system and Jorginho and Mahrez both fit the bill perfectly I think.

I'm assuming you mean Gundogan, I disagree, but even if it did happen Ndombele wouldn't be a replacement for him, you'd need another player who could play in Silva/KDB's role.

Think we’ll see Bernardo much more often centrally, taking into account the Mahrez signing, which would facilitate a potential gundogan exit. Just my opinion but a good World Cup, with the current market, could see a hefty profit on the 20m outlay. If there’s one thing we should of learned from over the last 10 years it’s cashing in at the right time!

I can't see it personally. I've spoken before about how strange it is the Pep completely avoided playing Bernardo centrally when D.Silva was away with family if he's about to move him inside, and if Gundogan has a good World cup at 27 we're likely to just say "Brilliant! he's finding his Dortmund form, can't wait to see him do this for us next season".

Next summer would make a lot more sense. If he's stayed fit another full season but getting similar reduced game time he's likely to get itchy feet when he could start in any of the other sides in the top 6. At that point a sale might suit everyone inlvolved.
