At some point you can only take people at their word.

City briefing as they are, can only be as a result of speaking directly to his agent at some point during today.

The agent could well have lied to buy them some more time, but there has to be a judgement call from City, having worked with all the parties involved.

Would it not be better to say nothing at this point mate? We putting our neck on the line making comments like this and risk looking like we dont know whats going on...

Why would Napoli's owner be pushing him to Chelsea? If we have agreed a deal with them.

He also states Chelsea have offered the player better personal terms?

I don't see what's in it for ADL by helping a departing player leverage better wages from City.

Chelsea do have form for working in this way, having stolen Willian from Spurs like this.

So is this dead for us?

There isn't any risk by issuing a statement basically saying we have negotiated a deal and the only reason it's not happening is because agent / player have been dishonest. Protects our integrity for future deal making regardless of this outcome imo

At this point I would be surprised if it wasn’t. Happily surprised but if a player, as reported, values the city he will live in over the club and the manager he could play for then maybe it’s for the best. I’m sure we have a Plan B and C.

That's not what we are saying though?

City's brief is that Chelsea interest isn't real, a "ruse" in their words?

We must still be very confident for some reason leaving our arse hanging out.

Even that seems odd though. If he's waiting for white smoke within 24 hours why not stay there. Surely they'll want him in training etc and he'll want to start sorting out all the usual moving to another country stuff.

Agree mate, this whole transfer has been very strange.....maybe its now done between Jorginho and Chelsea and they waiting to confirm Sarri first?
