Jules Koundé

I watched the Super Cup game. I thought Sevilla were good and so was Kounde but Sevilla is a team that gives everything and gets everything out of their players. Their captain Navas was immense.

How good would their individual players be if you took them out of a very determined and unified team and put them in a new side? Open question.

Koulibaly has doubts too (effect of age on a player whose game relies on physical prowess).

Difficult to know each individual case.

I recon we probably haven't been especially following him & have got lucky, that he stood out recently.

I accept we aren’t Dortmund or even Seville so don’t necessarily have to take a chance on the next up and coming hot player but we needed a defender last year so should have been aware. Or more worryingly, maybe he has just stood out for a bit and will go back to being a 20 million pound player soon?

Who knows. But if we get him, I obviously hope he does well and he looks like fun. I.e quick, can jump, get stuck in and win tackles. Something we’ve been missing

I watched all of it. I would discount extra time as that game should have gone straight to pens

He looked good against the best team around, not sure what else people want.

I’m going to say this quietly but I think he might have a bit of the Otemendi about him I.e he enjoys a slide tackle and getting stuck it. He put his teammate under pressure at the start with a pass that the other player wasn’t in a position to receive but overall and given it was his first game of the season he was good

Wether he’s worth 60mil is a conversation for another day but seen as though they only paid 20 for him last season, I’d ask why weren’t we at the table then. Has he really improved that much in 1 season, really?
Who do you suggest then?

This is what happens when you fail to identify and move on targets until the final weeks of the transfer window.

Although Sevilla were generally impressive and he was too,his game didn't scream 'buy me', but looking at City's squad it's obvious we need a player in this position. We are inevitably going to end up massively overpaying. In part goes with the territory but could we not have scouted for 18 months and come up with a young and upcoming player in the same way that Sevilla did 12 months ago?

I’m not suggesting alternatives. But then again I don’t have 40 years of football experience, an established scouting network and 8 clubs around the world as part of the same group.....

The trouble with the Seville model for a club like City is that all the up and coming players don’t make it to the top. I think City and others see it as being worth the wait. It’s debatable but we have recently bought Sane and now Torres so I think they would argue their approach is blended

He was not bad but Sevilla playing so much different game than us very hard to compare. Of course against Bayern they are even more defensive than usuall but their normal game is nothing like City's.

We only will see Kounde when he is put in a defence that spends 90% of game at halfway line, gets zero protection and opponent puts balls behind the defence and they need to hold perfect offside line and react within nanoseconds. And also any misplaced pass can end in a quick counter where Ederson rarely can make a save and its a goal like 90% of the time.

Same goes for Koulibaly too.

to me Diego looked the much more dominant, stronger CB there, Kounde needs to be controlled/directed imo, possibly Laporte will be able to do that. KK is different, he is ready made experienced CB, he would maybe even lead the backline instead of Laporte at times.

The problem for the club when looking for non UK qualified players that are seen as potential but not ready for the first team squad is taking up a foreign slot that may take a year to establish themselves. It is therefore a policy to let players develop in clubs who can take the risk.

City don't have the luxury of filling their non UK quota with players of potential and developing them by playing them in the first team. This is why we purchase players pre 18 years of age and usually loan them out.

This achieves 2 things, one by 21 they are classed as homegrown and secondly they are usually loaned out to develop themselves at a higher level than what they would get at City. After a few years they can then either be integrated back in as a first team player or sold on , usually at a profit.

Loves sliding in, doesnt he? Hopefully he would do well in a team like ours that presses and plays extremely differently. I think finding a CB for our team is the most difficult job ever, we finished half of it with Laporte though.
