Jules Koundé

That's a really good point and a similar one was made when we jettisoned Joe Hart for Claudio Bravo. The point being that a goalkeeper who is excellent at distributing the ball does not have to make a raft of saves. Most of our defensive problems are not down to losing aerial battles.

No they are not. We have been hit far too often on the break, playing the high line, or been the masters of our own downfall by defensive errors. Losing aerial duels, to concede, has been negligible and to get into that situation an error would have had to previouly have occured.

In Peps system the centre halfs are fundamental to how we play, playing a high line so we can condense the space, enabling the press, to win the ball, in transition, high up the field. Hence Peps last consideration is height. Laporte also should be stepping up as a leader now in the back line, and if we get Kounde he should grow alongside him.

Amazing how this transfer, for many, seems to be the difference between optimism and pessimism heading into the new season. If the hype is warranted then I’m excited to see him play, but I also think Laporte and Ake as a partnership will be 10 time’s better than what we had to endure for most of last season!

Agreed, and getting him in alongside Walker Laporte and Ake would make a great back 4 - though they will be under pressure if the deep-lying midfielder isn’t doing his job properly too ;-)

It will be much easier for the deep lying midfielder having that back 4 than it was with Otamendi Fernandinho Zinchenko behind him.

Three relatively young, mobile, talented and still developing central defenders would be a tasty prospect.

Personally this transfer makes a lot more sense than chasing a 29 year old and paying top money in a pretty stagnant market.

You’re quite correct also, with Kounde, there will not be an obligation that he has to play every week with Ake and Laporte being available.

It is the nature of new signings, you rarely kmow there failings, where as the failings of Ota we all know far too well. That in itself breeds optimism, even if it could be misguided.

Would be really happy with this. plenty of years for him to get even better. I also think we have a decent relationship with Sevilla.
