Two of those earmarked to leave Ottimendi and Stones have done their bit even if in the case of Stones his career looks like it is stuck in the sand. Mendy has suffered serious injury but he can still put in a shift Cancelo looks like he may come good and was excellent for Portugal recently. Ake has played only one game and while his performance was encouraging we will have to wait until April to offer a verdict. Individually and collectively we under performed in defence last season but that was down to a lot more than having a load of shite to pick from.

How good or bad our defence looks can also depend on the opposition. First half against Wolves, they were more passive, we looked very comfortable. Second half they really had a go, and our defence looked a lot more vulnerable. We also can't judge a player on one game, remember Mangala.

He's 26, aside a loan spell he's been at Juve since start of his career. Never been a regular, and now 5th choice behind De Ligt, Demiral, Bonucci and Chiellini. Decent ball playing centre half but I'd stay well clear, it's a very risky signing to be aiming for given his lack of experience and gameplay time (also once he seemed like playing a bit regularly knee injuries stalled his progress). So yeah, big no for me

I believe the 20% to Bordeaux is only up to €45m. Still €9m though and the general point is perfectly valid.

Stones and Otamendi were fairly pricey (at the time) signings who were meant to lead our defence for 5+ years. We got cumulatively about 1 good season each from them. Given our ambitions and the importance of central defenders, that's at minimum pretty poor.
