1) All Premier League clubs must submit a squad of up to 25 players, by 5pm on Wednesday, September 1.

2) Each 25-man squad must include at least eight 'home-grown' players.

3) The 'home-grown' players do not have to be English. According to the Premier League: "A home grown player is defined as one who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Welsh Football Association for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21)." In practice this means that Cesc Fabregas, who joined Arsenal when he was 16, counts as one of the Gunners' home-grown quota.

4) In addition to the 25-man named squad, clubs can use an unlimited number of players aged 21 or under. This means that Manchester City's new £22.5m striker Mario Balotelli, who is just 20, does not need to be named in their 25-man squad. According to the Premier League: "An Under 21 player is defined as one who is under the age of 21 on 1st January in the year in which the season commences. For the 2010/11 campaign Under 21 players will have been born on or after 1st January 1989."

5) Clubs can make changes to their squad but only during transfer windows, so once submitted the clubs will be stuck with that squad until January. Only in exceptional circumstances, such as a goalkeeper crisis, can changes be made outside the window, and then only if the Premier League board approves the changes.

6) Once the transfer window opens again, there are no restrictions on how many changes clubs can make to their squads, so they can replace the entire 25 if they want to.

7) Even if a player is not named in the 25-man squad, they can still play in the FA Cup, League Cup, Champions League or Europa League.

8) Players from the 25-man squad cannot be replaced if they are loaned to Football League clubs, but can regain their spot in the group if they return to the parent club.

9) Clubs do not have to name a full squad of 25 if they do not have that many contracted players and in this case they can add free agents outside the transfer window. However if they have 25 eligible contracted players, they must be named.

10) Similarly, clubs do not have to name eight 'home-grown' players if they do not have enough, but this would mean submitting a reduced squad.

.................................

what if they play him in a prem game ?
See the gigantic text. If they didn't have space, they will have taken somebody shit out, or they may have even taken Vidic or Fletcher out, if they know they wont play again this season.

i'd like to know who they took out

Macheda is on loan !! or is he under 20/home grown.

just on a side note whats the rule regarding the 25 man squad is that only applicable in the Prem ?

thats a very interesting question

Pretty sure it's the same rules as the Carling Cup, in that there are no squad limitations. Same reason we could play Bridge and Nedum who aren't part of our Prem 25 man squad.

The good news for us (and the rest of football for that matter) is the message this sent out to the Rags' players. Ferguson obviously doesn't rate some of them and he hasn't any money to strengthen. Nani's body language when he was subbed said it all. I wonder what Shrek now thinks of the promise to invest in the team when he signed his new contract ?? Buying a duff goalie and the new Duncan Edwards ( ! ) can hardly fill him with much confidence.

Tick Tock.

I don't want to be reinstated because Scholes was ineligible (which I don't believe he was). Don't get me wrong, I wanted to beat them twats yesterday and I was gutted when we lost, but I actually believe being out of the FA cup will do us a favour this season. Lets go all out to beat the scousers and win the Carling cup and play the reserves in the Europa League. Our focus can then be 100% on winning the Premier League.

^^ That was their top, full strength team with the exception of a fit Vidic and Fletcher, maybe Young.

Nani must have been really happy he was subbed for a 37 year old who hasn't played a competitive match in 9 months whose most noticeable contribution to the game was gifting us our 2nd goal.

Wonder what shrek thinks now, he's dragging this scum team around by the scruff of the neck. When he looks around the training pitch (or in games) and there is a 37 and 38 year old midfielder and Anderson there (admittedly their wingers are good/ok). Baresi Jones looks like he plays for the Dog & Duck half the time, Ferdinand is looking a liability and Evra is definitely on a downward slope. Their replacement right and left backs are made of glass.

I honestly think only shrek (Vidic if fit) would make our 1st team, maybe Nani in the LW position . A couple of squad players we could use from the rest of their side, Welbeck as 4th striker and Smalling as defensive cover and maybe a winger (if we used them).

Sour Alex is a genius to have that team playing as they do, coupled with other PL teams still giving up b4 the ball is kicked. A few teams this season have showed they can be got at but too many still just don't try.

Not bad for 2 hours worth of fishing (wumming?) plenty of bites on the prevous 8 pages.

Nani will be practising throw ins for the rest of this week. Did you see taggert showing him how to take one! Hilarious. No wonder he was subbed!
