Just interviewed Dennis Tueart

One of my many many City heroes. His overhead kick is one of the most iconic images in our history.

Iconic indeed, I hope it's on the front cover of the book.

Dennis has asked me to include the book signings information in my Sabotage Times piece. If however the editor removes them due to space restriction I thought I'd put them here too.

All royalties from the book are going to the teenage and young adult cancer unit at The Christie.

Around 1980 mate of mine (and fellow Blue) started up a new Squash Club and he rang Maine Road to ask if he could arrange for a player to attend the opening. They said they'd see what they could do and would get back to him. To his surprise Dennis Tueart rang him back and said that as he was a keen squash player he would be delighted to come along.

My mate asked him how much he wanted in appearance money but Dennis said that he'd do it for free. My mate insisted that he would like to give him something so Dennis just said that a few bottles of wine would be fine.

Anyway, not only did he come to the opening day but he asked if he could bring down some of the lads after training one day, for a few games of squash and a gentle work out & sauna etc. Which he did a few days later.
I had a good chat with him and he really was a nice fella.

I well recall that along with a few items of clothing (including underpants) which were left behind by some of the players after they had gone, Joe Corrigan left his watch in the changing room. It was a decent one too.
My mate and I called in at the ground the following Saturday before the match to drop it off.

Dennis rang my mate afterwards to thank him for returning it.
Top bloke all the way round and one of my favourite all time City players.

Having seen all our great players from the 60's onwards, I'd put DT a very close second to Colin Bell in terms of overall ability. He had great technical ability, pace, was very physical and a deadly finisher. In fact, in some ways he was a more exciting player to watch than the King.

Will do mate.

In fact, got a query about the headline for any *ahem* old-timers.....the title will be 'Dennis Tueart: King Of All Geordies'. But that was a bit before my time. Did the Kippax used to sing this often?

Bloody hell - this really brings it home to you how time marches on. Being an old timer for remembering Dennis Tueart in his pomp! :)

Anyway, yes, it did get sung an awful lot. Tueart was a major crowd idol, especially in his first spell: he was the principal flair player once Rodney Marsh left, scored loads of goals and cemented his position as the terrace favourite because one of those goals was an impossibly spectacular effort that was the winner in a Wembley cup final.

As Prestwich Blue and one or two others say above, he really was an outstanding player. Could play on either wing, in midfield or up front, could shoot or cross with either foot, was very skilful, quick, a great finsher and was aggressive as well. A bit of a travesty that he only won a handful of caps for England.

As it happens, I had an email only this morning recommending his book from someone who read a preview copy. I know he rubbed a few people up the wrong way during his time as a director, but it will be very interesting to read his account.

Hate to think what would happen now if a player nutted another player like Dennis nutted that Hartlepool player (Potter was it ?)Probably a jail sentence. Still, different times.
