Just interviewed Dennis Tueart

to this day my almost 90 year old dad still sings "tuert's a litter lout" several times a week - after seeing him throw some paper or fag ends or something out of his car in bowdon, circa 1977.......

Around 1980 mate of mine (and fellow Blue) started up a new Squash Club and he rang Maine Road to ask if he could arrange for a player to attend the opening. They said they'd see what they could do and would get back to him. To his surprise Dennis Tueart rang him back and said that as he was a keen squash player he would be delighted to come along.

My mate asked him how much he wanted in appearance money but Dennis said that he'd do it for free. My mate insisted that he would like to give him something so Dennis just said that a few bottles of wine would be fine.

Anyway, not only did he come to the opening day but he asked if he could bring down some of the lads after training one day, for a few games of squash and a gentle work out & sauna etc. Which he did a few days later.
I had a good chat with him and he really was a nice fella.

I well recall that along with a few items of clothing (including underpants) which were left behind by some of the players after they had gone, Joe Corrigan left his watch in the changing room. It was a decent one too.
My mate and I called in at the ground the following Saturday before the match to drop it off.

Dennis rang my mate afterwards to thank him for returning it.
Top bloke all the way round and one of my favourite all time City players.

Reminds me of when he played and got beat by Rigsby - Leonard Rossiter LOL

The word legend gets used far too frequently for my liking.A couple of goals, kiss the badge and thats it for some.Surely this guy is the real deal.He is for me anyhow.

Be surprised if you could find many who remember him playing at City, especially in his first spell, who'd dispute that.

-- Wed Nov 02, 2011 6:38 pm --

Does anyone recall the run from inside his own half against Derby in '76 when he rounded the keeper and slid the ball in from the tightest of angles? I can still see the ball bobbling across the line- it seemed to take for ever before the place errupted.

If anyone doesn't recall it, you can refresh your memory here:

Incidentally, look at the Derby number nine who gets all the way back but can't stop Tueart rolling the ball in. Sure I've seen him somewhere before! :)

Mate, that's the first City game I ever went to, April 1976 just after the LC win, as a 14 year old lad from Aberdeen finally getting to see my hero and team. What a game as well, Dennis sprinting away to get the 4th. My Dad gave me a couple of quid (it was a lot in those days) to spend in the club shop at the stadium before the match and I've still got the stuff I bought.

In fact, got a query about the headline for any *ahem* old-timers.....the title will be 'Dennis Tueart: King Of All Geordies'. But that was a bit before my time. Did the Kippax used to sing this often?

Sang it all the time Denis is another one of my boyhood heroes.

One of the true greats of the 70's. Everyone just HAD to have tie ups like Dennis Tueart.

Fair play to dennis true city legend.

Cant wait for the Samarras chronicles or "Rocky, my time on the bench, a pictionary of injuries". ;)

Funny but I thought that DT had the rep that he was a little "difficlut" or aloof. Glad to hear so many GREAT stories about the guy.

He is one of the big reason I became a City fan. In the mid 70's there was a little football boom in America when Pele came to the Cosmos and they sort of just took off. It only really lasted maybe 4 years.

We got on hours edited highlights of ONE game per week. No internet in the late 70's. Had to rely and pen pals and papers cuttings sent to me. Anywhoo when DT came to the Cosmos he became my fav player. He was a fan favorite overall. I heard he and Chinaglia (SUPER EGO) didnt get along. After seeing DT play for the Cosmos cemented my affinity for City. Went along for the painful ride for about 33 years!! Up until last season he had a fucking lot to answer for!!!!

THANKS DENNIS!!!
