Didn't we play AC Milan in the round before? seem to remember we drew 2-2 at their place & beat them 4-0 at Maine Rd...or is my memory playing up again
Barnsey had a great game that night too, particularly in the first half. (If I remember rightly, we were 3-0 up at the break)
Happy days in the Platt lane end with my late (sadly missed) Dad :-)
The AC game, from my memory George, we played away first and we were 2-0 up at half-time only for them to bring it back to 2-2 ( a few dodgy decisions too I think).
The return leg I think was 3-0 to us with Asa scoring a good goal from the edge of the area.
The odd thing I seem to remember about the first leg though was that it was played earlier in the day as I`m sure I remember being in school keeping an eye out for the result ?
That year I think we went out to Borussia MG in the 1/4 or semis.
We went out to Juve in the first round in 1976/7. United beat Ajax in the first round and got Juve in the second round. We actually gave Juve a real fright - should have won the first leg by more, and in the second leg were pressing them at 2-0 (hit the woodwork and forced Zoff into a few saves. Could have won by more at home, too.
United, in contrast, scraped their win in the home leg and were really battered in Turin. Trapattoni, in his first year as Juve coach, said that they'd had the harder game against us - I was at school in Stretford, surrounded by Rags, at the time, so made much of that!
The Milan game was in 1978/9. As mentioned by the poster just above, we drew 2-2 at their place and then won 3-0 at Maine Road with all the goals coming in the first half. We'd knocked out Twente Enschede and Standard Liege before playing Milan, afterwards we lost the QF to Borussia Monchengladbach against whom we lost 3-1 in the away leg having held them 1-1 at home.
The reason you remember the Milan game being played in the afternoon is because the match was originally due to be played on the Wednesday night but was called off due to fog. It was played on the Thursday afternoon instead.
We were 2-0 up in the first leg with not long left, and I think we'd have been at that stage the first away team to win at Milan in European competition (something like that, anyway). They came back at us with two late goals though, so we missed the record - even though it was a great result.
In 1976/7, Juve won both Serie A and the UEFA Cup. In 1978/9, that Milan side ended up Serie A champions and Monchengladbach took the UEFA Cup. Having seen us mix it like that and give a good account of ourselves against the top European sides as a kid, it was pretty heartbreaking to see us become as utterly hopeless as we did for much of the intervening period. Heartfelt thanks to Mansour for giving us the chance to make up for last time.
Juve first up, though. What a bastard of a draw that was. Thank God the draws are seeded now, say I! ;)
