I'm not comparing them as players, I'm saying the fan reaction to Dias was similarly overwhelmingly negative

Have a look here, it's funny in hindsight

I watched him quite a bit in his last year at Benfica because of our interest, he was pretty terrible tbf but then the entire team were. Certainly a surprise how he hit the ground running

While I do agree somewhat I also think you've highlighted specific failures

For every Ndombele, Fred etc. You have

Neves - £16mil
Soucek - £14mil
Bissouma - £15mil
Bentacur - £16mil

The bottom line is that there is no right answer...there are players who can take to English football like a duck to water and prove that there is real value out there.....and then there are those that just can't replicate there form, but Phillips I think we know exactly what we are getting.....so the risk is lower but so is the reward

Will say that in those examples you listed....they are all players who went for £50mil plus....maybe that's the problem

I can get behind Phillips for around the £35mil mark, although don't think he's THAT good....and honestly for that value, if we can get Bissouma I'd much rather him he has the dynamism we lack imo

I hear you, it makes sense. I'd say only Bissouma is on the same level as Phillips and I'd be happy with him for sure. The only thing is he's probably that good that he could go to say, Chelsea, and be a 1st teamer. They'll have a gap as Kante's legs are going/gone.

The English
/homegrown element is another factor that increases Phillips value for me. When there's an English player who's good enough available, it's good practice to get them in and save up for the limited foreign spots we have in positions where there aren't as many options domestically.

I think he'll be brilliant if we can manage to get him. He's got everything needed in a midfielder - passing, aggression, awareness, ball carrying - as well as knowing the league already, and a few of the players from international duty then off the pitch seems like a good lad too.

Not to mention the fact he's been coached by Bielsa for a few years which can only stand him in good stead under Pep in terms of positioning on the pitch.

Not every signing needs to be from a big club and a statement one (see Zaba and Kompany for reference) for the player to be effective in what we need. He is a very good player now and under Pep's coaching, he'll excel to another level.

All supposedly at a bargain price? Get him in.
Did you see his stats? They are awful.

Fernandinho picked up a booking every 328 minutes. Phillips has picked up a booking every 338 minutes.

He'll easily trump the great man's record if he comes here.
I think the only fair comparison on Fern would be booking per minute before the ‘tactical fouls’ comment….and after. I reckon prior to the remark his bookings per minute were much lower…

Maybe, though in his earlier seasons he was actually booked more often; latterly, of course , he became more adept at committing the sort of fouls that go unpunished. Genius.

Agree. Leeds will need to play a narrative out to their fans just as Villa did - we did everything we could to keep him but he decided to go…
Yup i think its gonna be the same.. Make him look bad too. But i think City will bag him
