Playing the role he will is not about tackling, its being able to control the whole way we play and linking defense to attack. Fern was a master at it and Rodri has now developed over two seasons to be able to do it incredibly well. The big question is whether Phillips can do it.

Remember when Pep was ridiculed when he first came here when he said he didn’t coach tackling?

what I find staggering with Rodri is that his game seems to have quietly gone from bang average to brilliant. The Pep factor must be strong in this transformation. I think Phillips is limited and too slow but trust Pep‘s judgement completely.

Go and watch De Jong play, then you'll have your answer. De Jong is in a different stratosphere to Phillips.

And De Jong offers nothing defensively and is a completely different type of midfielder than the type we’re after.

If we were replacing Gundo then De Jong would be my #1 target but Phillips fits the profile of what we need more
