Beilsa probably rec'd phillips as pep loves the guy. He's used to difficult training sessions too.

I am very, very unconvinced of Phillips as a player of the level required, but I am also very, very willing to be proven wrong.
I'm not convinced after seeing some of his recent performances

But I am 100% convinced that the opinion of Pep and his team is a million times more informed than mine

I’m not being funny. I’m not stating the obvious. But City have watched him over a period of time. They have put his performance and match stats through the City player meat grinding software machine. They know facts and stats about him that we will never know. If CIty know he’s their man, they will buy him regardless of what’s posted on this thread. So people might as well accept he’s coming to City, unless it’s another one of City’s diversionary tactics and they are in for another player we don’t know about.

Part of the difficulty and why I say I'm unconvinced rather than outright questioning the possible transfer is Phillips has played in a completely different setup when it comes to defending.

Go and watch De Jong play, then you'll have your answer. De Jong is in a different stratosphere to Phillips.

De Jong is not a 6. His best football under Koeman at barca was as a 8. He was top 2 players in the Barca squad that season. Xavi has tried to make him Busquets heir but he just doesn't fit the role why Xavi is fine with him leaving.

You and me Willipp.
what I find staggering with Rodri is that his game seems to have quietly gone from bang average to brilliant. The Pep factor must be strong in this transformation. I think Phillips is limited and too slow but trust Pep‘s judgement completely.
Yeah I’m the same. Rodri that first season was slow on the ball which more than anything catches players out. He also was very sideways and backwards which over the course of time has transformed. He presses really well now, is so much more switched on as a player and his passing is fantastic now, something pep clearly see’s in Phillips.

Would we rather have Phillips or DeJong
Philips, as having seen Nigel at some of the recent celebrations, I don't think he'd have 90 minutes in him anymore.

If you mean Frenkie then it depends what we need, as they're completely different players. If people think Phillips would struggle as a DM for us, they'd have kittens watching de Jong.

Phillips would certainly be different, we haven't really got anyone who likes a tackle and gets stuck in .
A few sessions with Pep will transform him into a tenacious Rolls Royce

Really good thread

There's not much supporting evidence and a number of extremely dubious statements, such as:

Positionally, he's more than capable of playing as a lone 6 or even playing alongside Rodri as a double pivot. I know the thought of a double pivot isn't welcoming to some supporters, but Phillips can fill the role well without sacrificing any attacking prowess

Playing Phillips instead of Bernardo or Gündy absolutely WOULD sacrifice attacking prowess

Depends on the rest of the lineup. A double pivot with Rodri gives Kev a free role, you gain there. It would be a drop off but not majorly i think
