People concerned about the lone DM thing, he’s actually played his best football for us as that and we’ve felt he’s lost some form when Marsch came in and started playing a double pivot.

You’re a Leeds fan and have just posted that last season he was average at best. Plenty on here agree that he is just an average player and don’t care at all who he plays for.
Tbf everything about last season was horrible for us. A lot of good players would probably have struggled.

Bielsa ball is a madness though. It’s not about positioning, it’s about man v man all over the pitch and sprints off the ball.

Pepball is far more about positioning and specific pressing.

Is Phillips able to change his approach?

100% correct. Most successful teams over the years have had their own versions of Akes, or Phillips. There is nothing wrong with having these types of players in the squad, playing 10-15 games a season. It’s just that most teams didn’t/don’t pay a combined £100m for them.

The difference for me is that I rated Ake when he was at Bournemouth and, although I understood people questioning his price, I didn't care because I could see his quality.

Speaking only for myself, it's got nothing to do with him playing for Leeds or being shit for England tonight but I don't see it with him.

He's an alright player and it's true that we can't just drop £100m on a world class holding mid just to rotate him with the one we've already got but we've just seen how long it's taken Rodri to get fully into his stride and he's twice the player. Take that bedding in period and give him less minutes and we could be looking at a couple of years before he gets going.

We've just seen it happen with Ake. The guy struggled for a consistent run of appearances and it showed every time he started; he looked nervous and out of place. This is a guy who was a Premier League regular and was considered by many Bournemouth fans to be their best ever player.

To Leeds and their fans, he's probably worth well over £60m. For us, it just seems bizarre. That's Rodri/ Dias/ Mahrez territory and he's simply nowhere near that level. I'd definitely take a bet on that if there was any real way of quantifying it.

If Pep wants him and the club are happy to throw that kind of money to fill that role then so be it but I don't think anyone can really blame people for scratching their heads and wondering why.

Tbf the transfer market doesn’t make sense anymore. I’d want £60m+ because of what I’ve seen other English players go for (White £50m, Maguire £80m, Grealish £100m) but yet as you’ve pointed out you’ve managed to acquire genuine world class talent for £60m.
