Maybe Pep feels that he needs to tweak the midfield dynamic a bit now we are going to be playing with a more conventional striker, and Phillips would bring mobility and a bit of bite? Personally, I don't think his first touch and speed of thought are good enough for a Pep midfield - however, my opinion counts for fuck all!!!

Yesterday was even more proof that he wants the move to us. He's going to be 27 soon, has a lot good about him which was nurtured by Bielsa, but to be truly at the next level and play anywhere on the highest stage, he needs Pep to refine his game. Instill some discipline in his game and reduce the errors. The best defensive midfiders right now are ones that play it safe first, and once they've mastered that, like Rodri, they can try and help the team more at times and take calculated risks. Don't care about yesterday but he'll be a big asset going into the world cup even if he has 2-3 months training with us.

FWIW, The Athletic are reporting that there’s been no bid, or even contact, from City as yet but that the club think they can close the deal for £45-50m.

I think the issue is for people when you pay £50-60m for a player you expect him to be more complete. I'd agree with that, but the English players on market don't come cheap and it's unfortunately been that way. We might well be over paying for him but it's worth it to us and our squad needs.

It's only worth it if they're good enough to come in and do the job, otherwise it can all blow up in a few games. Hopefully united will come in like they did with that carthorse Maguire

I agree,he isnt worth the prices quoted, very few players are.

But let's see if he turns up here, and secondly lets wait and see what we actually pay when he does (not that it matters)

He is plenty good enough to be our back up destroyer,or to compliment Rodri when required, thats all thats of importance.
But he's not good enough to be our back up destroyer, that's literally the point. I thought DM was his specialism yet he was played through time and again last night, at one point giving away a goal by doing so.

If we do have a £60mil budget for midfield cover and this guy is the best the club have decided on, then the scouts aren't doing their job properly.

sounds like pep still wants him and i`m sure the england phillips will be different to the england phillips.

He had a decent Euros but I've never understood the hype surrounding him. Last night he was very poor but it could have been down to a lack of fitness. I rate Rice but he's maybe too similar to Rodders. We should be going all out for Bellingham.

Maybe we have other cheaper options for back up. Hope this one fizzles out just like Kane, Maguire, JFE Sanchez etc.
Hopefully he doesn't want to play second fiddle here and wants to be a starter every game.

I doubt Bellingham will be going anywhere this summer with his brother set to join him at Dortmund. Maybe next year.

Suspect that it will “accelerate” in the next 7 days. Doesn’t sound like Leeds are hugely resistant to it and I wonder if it allows them to ignore all but the silliest offers for Raphinha.

Also, shows how little I know about football, I watched him last night and thought he looked like a Pep player. ;)
