Kalvin Phillips

Staying this summer was a pretty dumb decision from him. Just pure delusion, ignoring every piece of evidence in front of his face that the manager doesn't trust you to lay the cones out let alone start a game. It's probably hard to accept a complete failure like this, but with england place on the line, youd think he'd get over all that and have moved on in the summer. Now he's going another 6 months without football just to be in the same spot

I don't see him playing a roll anywhere for a side in the PL, now. He brings absolutely fuck all to the party. It's a shame as I'd hope he'd backed his own ability and would push for a place. Looks like he's done neither.

What the media cunts don't seem to understand is that being English doesn't automatically mean you should be playing every week, not as if he was ever going to get ahead of Rodri who let's be honest is the best DM in the world.

Spot on.
Very poor career planning by his agent/management as well. Not facing reality is sheer incompetent. Kalvin seems to lack some good advice, or he refuses to listen.

It could still change, I think too many people look for the negatives, he might be an asset between now and the next window, so let it lye a little and see what happens in the next ten weeks. A lot of football to be played and we can’t afford to ignore players who are obviously capable of doing a job. Some seem to expect Phillips to be a Rodri clone, he was never going to be that, but with a fully-fit squad and the return of Kev, things could change very quickly, just like they did with Jack

The thing is, he decided to stay in the Summer which is absolutely fine - that's his perrogative given the contract we gave him, we can't force him out and he did get a chance recently with Rodri suspended. Probably the chance he was thinking he might get when mulling over staying.

But he didn't take it. Simple as that.

It's a shame because I thought he'd be perfect but he's just so static when in possession and buzzes about when out of possession. Essentially the opposite of what we/Pep want in a midfielder. Compare to Rodri who never seems to break sweat and controls matches by reading the game well and being clever in his movement. Brain over legs.

Hopefully he gets his move in January and hopefully Paqueta's investigation (which has gone quiet!) is done by then too so we can make an obvious swap + cash deal happen.

I do think his own confidence plays a part. He looks like a frightened rabbit when he’s playing for us, has contributed to a couple of soft conceded goals and his scanning seems forced. His first touch isn’t brilliant but the lad can definitely find a pass. His lack of game time makes him look sluggish, which he is putting down to exactly that. I think it’s actually much more than that. He doesn’t appear to be technically capable both physically and mentally to play Pep’s style of football. At Leeds he was outstanding breaking play up and then playing a fast ball forward, we seldom do this. Ours is a more considered approach, waiting for an opportunity to exploit space having moved the opposition team about.
I would still love for the lad to come good and prove a lot of doubters wrong but sometimes you just have to shake hands and move on. Time will tell how Kalvin and Pep see this over the next 8 or 9 weeks.

Good points, he's certainly a very good player for me, but he's not Rodri, he maybe can be a useful stand in but he's still learning it, and for me showing signs he can

I doubt he'll be hear after January though, but I hope he stays and learns.
