Kalvin Phillips

I have been thinking this Kalvin thing over. I'm wondering if he is attempting to shield the passing areas between himself and the defensive 3rd when we are in possession.
Attempting to limit the effectiveness of the opponents press close in to the passing lanes of the defensive groups. A bit of pre-emptive obstructive gamesmanship, as it were.
If that's not it then I'm out of ideas.
You are Pep Guardiola and I claim my five pounds.

Cheers seemed very genuine to me. He also looked genuinely very happy when he came across and applauded the fans at the end.
I hope he gets a bit of confidence and can push on from here.
I think you've hit the nail on the head. I suspect he's a confidence player in that an arm around the shoulder is more likely to achieve the desired result than a haranguing by the manager and/or the fans. Whether a player is able to make the grade in a Pep team when perhaps lacking that mental resilience is open to debate. What is unquestionable, however, is his desire to succeed and win over the fans. Hopefully, that will see him through. Otherwise, I didn't think it was possible to feel more proud to be a blue until I heard the positive reception he received yesterday.

I half expected there would be some but I didn't notice any ironic cheers, just support when he came on.

The cheers around me certainly seemed genuine rather than ironic. People want to see him do well, and yesterday was a decent start. He looked lively and knocked the ball around well, and always made himself available. Playing a double pivot will help him, and I think he can still do a job as a squad player. As others have said, he just needs to regain a bit of confidence.

I thought the cheers were genuine too, still irritates me though that once again he got caught in possession right in front of us on the right edge of our box when he was just being too laid back, that’s what drives me mad about him is that he seems too relaxed and not alert enough at times.

Cheers, were genuine.

His only error in his short cameo was getting caught on the ball but TBF, I think it was a trickier situation than you suggest. However, it is his movement in terms of winning the ball that have been my main concern with him.

Hopefully, minutes will help him. Great that the crowd got behind him because I think building confidence is a big part of his battle at City.

Every subs must be approved by Pep even if he didn't physically in there so if someone implying just because Lillo is the one that give him a chance to play and Pep will not give Philips chance if he actually in sidelines then you will be dead wrong on that.

Occam's Razor: The simplest explanation is the right one..

We don't want Cancelo type negativity in our squad.. so have a few minutes in a game that's already over!

Could be wrong but I took it that yesterday every player has had some minutes before the international break ,he did nothing wrong yesterday so no complaints from me

I’ve been very critical of Phillips the last few months and I know the game was done and dusted when he came on but I thought he played well when he came on. So like it or lump it he’s here until January so hopefully he can turn things around and we will all want him to stay come January.

I have noticed that Kalvin gravitated close to an apponent player when we have possession. He doesn't try to find space.
Now, I'm not saying I know how he is instructed to play, but glueing himself to an apponent when we have the ball seems counterproductive.
Shirley he needs to be finding space to make himself available to receive a pass?
It looked like he was placed himself between two of their players and then Bernardo dropped back into space to receive the ball.

Absolutely zero to suggest that Kalvin Phillips has a questionable character or is likely to create a negative atmosphere. Despite having had a difficult 12 months he's never shown himself to be anything other a pretty positive guy who is working hard to get his opportunity. Even when Pep threw him under the bus by publicly discussing his weight, he put on a brave face about it. Also speaks volumes that the club haven't tried to force him out despite having seemingly decided they might not have too much use for him after all.

Seems to be a small section of our fanbase who are frustrated that this signing hasn't worked out so far and their way of dealing with that is to try and smear his character or question his professionalism. Personally think any frustrations surrounding this situation are probably best aimed at those responsible for the signing rather than the player himself. Or even better, why are people so arsed about it anyway? His presence inside the club has literally no impact on anyone's life outside of it.

The thing bothering a lot of City supporters about KP is that he was ostensibly brought in to take the stress off Rodri. Because KP hasn't worked out so far, it leaves the huge burden of playing 50-60 games still on Rodri's shoulders while we have an extra squad space and a wage taken up.
It's as much concern for Rodri's long term fitness and what impact an injury would have on our season as it is frustration for KP not making the grade.

He’s contract is worth 47 million over 6 years he ain’t going nowhere I wouldn’t mind sitting on the bench for a third of that
