Kalvin Phillips

I don’t understand how people expect him to come on after not playing for so long for us and somehow hit the ground running.I did see a player try his best and had some good moments. Does hold the ball a little to long and lost possession but he needs a run of games to really judge him. If he got some rhythm I think he would do okay. Obvious not Rodri level but will and can be a good cover. But need games! Hopefully he starts at Newcastle
 
Just seems not to know how to play composed football, not to say he's complete shite and cant do certain things well but just misplacing easy passes, poor positioning. big Guardiola principles and he's very poor at them.
 
I expected him to find it hard when he came on with no game time hardly! Maybe he needs a run of games to look better than he did! Let's see if pep picks him now Rodri out for 3 games

When Rodri came everyone said he was slow. Heck even as soon as a year ago people were saying he is slow. But he reads the game and you don’t need speed to play good. He needs games and go get up to rhythm
 
Got thrown into a 6-2-1 formation and did well. Carried the ball into the corner and fought hard to run the clock down. Couple of stray passes but everyone was at it for a bit of the second half so he wasn't alone. Brought the points home with the other nine lads left out there. Had to pick up the pieces after Rodri was a prat and he did.
 
I just felt he looks like he doesn’t belong there and maybe he thinks that, he’d obviously been told by Pep to do a certain thing but apart from the run down the right with the cross he wasn’t very good, pussied out a few tackles, tried flicking it about when clearly he needed to hold it. He will start on Wednesday maybe that will do him good for going into Wolves but if Kovacic is fit he’d get the nod from me.
 
Well done. Not sure how much more you can expect from him in the circumstances.

He's more comfortable carrying the ball than standing on it. Could he play the Nunes role next to a Rodri or Kovacic?
 
Perfect example of people making their minds up and seeing whatever backs that opinion.

Phillips was fine, did his job and helped solidify the defence that kept a clean sheet with a man less for half a game. Anybody expecting him to come on and help us boss the game with a man down is living in a dream world.

I imagine he will feature against newcastle in some capacity with a view to maybe getting a start against wolves and maybe that could be the catalyst to get him more involved. can't see pep going with him against arsenal though, I suspect pep will set us up completely differently In that game now without rodri, much closer to how we played with 10.

Seriously doubt it in the PL, nothing suggests that will happen.
It was interesting he was brought on today, but we were 2 up with few options.
Feel for the lad - hope he gets a full 90 midweek and shows what he's about
 
The problem Kalvin has is he is compared to Rodri who is world class. Did nothing wrong except not being Rodri. Give him a go now try him v barcodes and perhaps in a double pivot v wolves. Got a feeling we will set up totally differently at the arse.
