I was calling him a shameful fat disgrace then too. He’s an embarrassment to professional footballers.
I’d at least keep myself fit and give 100% to try and get back into the squad. I wouldn’t have come back overweight for the club World Cup break in which I didn’t play. I’d have some professional integrity.
I put more effort into my amateur cricket career.
I’m not going to comment on his football or attitude towards it, because none of us can. That said, this notion of “he has enough money that he couldn’t spend it all if he tried” is such a working class ethic sentiment as to be laughable for someone making £100,000 per week!
He doesn’t have “money,” he has “wealth!” Wealth should be multi-generational, and he is amassing it. If he has anything close to decent advisors, he is building wealth that will enable his entire family to live well for generations…esp if they DON’T waste it all on cars, clothes and holidays!

As a professional it doesn't show him in a good light, if he is prepared to stay around and not playing.
His contract has guaranteed him a very good future financially, but surely it is better to be playing, even if not at PL level.
Pretty sure City would find a solution if he was pushing to play elsewhere.
I’ve not even got a problem with him claiming his contracted wage. What I’ve got a problem with is him completely downing tools. It’s a funny form of employment football in that you can’t get sacked and lose your contract for being useless.
You are mistaking 99% of professional footballers for your notion of what they are. He had a good few years and earned his fortune from a club that saw something they thought they wanted, and were willing to pay handsomely to acquire. That wasn’t his “fault,” but he certainly enjoyed the fruits of City’s decision.
Now, if there was a lack of application or professional disrespect for the club, I could understand significant ire. However, apart from coming back from England duty, where he wasn’t being played, carrying a few extra kilos, I’m not aware of his lack of professionalism. Indeed, Pep made it very clear, very early, that he was not his cup of tea, even though he personally used the recommendation of his idol, Bielsa, to buy him!
He went out on loan numerous times and it didn’t work. I don’t know why because I couldn’t care less. However, if he was doing ANYTHING City could fire him for, I’m sure they would. They haven’t, he has a contract, so they pay him.
So, he cashed the cheques, they grow his wealth, and he appears “stuck” at a club that can’t unload him or wants to pay the bulk of his salary to allow him to leave.
Color me stupid, but if I was making about 10x what I could make anywhere else, but knew it was ending shortly, I might milk that for all it was worth so that my family was taken care of forever, too!
I don’t know about most of you, but I don’t live to work, I work to live. In his case, there’s going to be decades of living to be had after he finishes whatever work he does before retiring. Therefore, leverage your work to create the best living situation you can until you can’t any longer!
And, lastly, I wouldn’t lose a wink of sleep over a fan saying I was an embarrassment to professional footballers for doing it!
I’m not sure why people even try to impose their own personal views on the professional lives of others, especially when they have no real clue about the details of the situation.
He’s gone out on multiple loans. They were not successful. He went on tour with City and played. Didn’t change anything. What to do?
Not my problem. However, I’m not about to denigrate him or label him as an embarrassment to professional football.
If City can find a solution, find it. But, don’t expect a player exercising the ONE AND ONLY BIG CONTRACT OF HIS LIFE to simply walk away from it so a multi-billion pound organization can save a few quid…even if it is our beloved club.
I don’t blame him for running his contract down and keeping his millions pouring in, I blame him for his lack of application and lack of ambition to get anywhere near not just our side, but any side. Not team wants him, we’d happily send him on loan but nobody is interested.
He’s had criticism at both his loans for not being at it, not just in terms of lacking confidence on the ball and technical ability, but also his fitness and efforts.
He’s entitled to his pay cheque but I’m entitled to call him for not trying. He should have 5/6 years left of his career but it’ll be over the minute City stop paying him. And what’s he going to do in the game then? He’ll be rich enough to walk away obviously but nobody will want his opinion in coaching or punditry.
At least with Rico Lewis, who is also not our level, he’s absolutely doing his best to get fit and play when needed.
Nobody has suggested he walks away from his contract, why do you keep repeating that?

I think football is different as most fans would love to play at the highest possible level and dont think of the money first.
A lot of footballers won’t particularly like playing the game, but are good enough to get paid more than most can dream of.

Because if he were to leave City, it wouldn’t be on the money he is making here, and do City would have to make up the balance…unless he walked away from the contract “to play football and be a good professional.”

How multi-generational do you want things to be?
If anyone on £100k a week is spending faster than their wealth is increasing then that's a big problem. Anyone whose been earning £5m+ a year for a few years should already have multi-generational wealth. You could stop earning tomorrow, and you'd have to actively search for ways to spend that kind of money fast enough for it not to keep growing.

Again, I’m not saying he should leave City. I’m saying he should be putting in every effort to either make a loan move work or get some playing time against the likes of Exeter.
I have no idea of the day to day machinations of his life, his training regimen, or his attitude. I’m not sure any of us do.
If he was not fulfilling his contractual requirements, I assume City would fire him.
