Kefalonia

Skala is beautiful as several have said, it is really peaceful and a chill out holiday destination. Visit the war cemetery if you can, the Allied one is well looked after by the Greeks, but the German one was really overgrown and was not looked after at all, although that might have changed now (they Germans occupied Kefalonia during WW2).

My specialist subject!

Depending on what kind of jolly you like, Kef is a really quiet place.
Lassi is more or less a strip of bars, restaurants and apartments.
As someone said earlier you are only around the corner from Argostoli, there is A nightclub there, I think.

The top end of Argostoli is the war memorial tO the 1,000's of Italian soldiers that where butchered by the German army. I've seen locals spit when they've heard a German accent!
Maybe not so much now as they need every penny they can get and the younger ones are a bit more savvy Business wise. Anyway it's a very moving place to spend a few minutes reflection.

If you hire a car, before you go buy a map off amazon, the official OS Greek map, shows every goat track. It's a fiver I think, but will cost a tenner out there.

On the road heading out, south of the capital you'll see a ruined castle up on the hill. St George's castle. Great views from up there. Cafe run by English girl and Greek husband . Food is excellent. If you make it up there get the village sausage, it's the best in Greece .
Myrtos beach is out of this world, but get there early and watch the current. It has a very steep slope intO the water and a really strong under current.

My favourite places are Agia Efemia, for the boats and brilliant restaurants.
Fiscardo is more for the yachting crowd, therefore its expensive to eat and drink.
Another of my favs is Spartia, nowt there, two restaurants two shops.

Lourdas is across the bay from Spartia and has a great long sandy beach.
Walk around the headland a bit and find yourself at trapazaki beach.
Assos after you ve been to Myrtos is a must, lovely little pebble beach.

Strangely enough I've never done the caves or the lake but if you do best to book on the early trips as I've heard it gets chocka.

I'll be there in August I think, looking at villa in Spartia they are offering them half price at the mo' lets see if it carries on.

Any more info let me know.

I was wondering about this. Because Greece is in a crisis at the moment. Does this mean that holidays there are cheaper or more expensive?

I've heard from someone that just got back from Skala that U S dollars are very much appreciated, far more than the pound!
Good exchange rates as well!

( no wonder they're in the shit!)

It all sounds brilliant, i just wish i was going for two or three weeks now. Sounds like a week isn't enough to see everything and relax on a beach as well.

Don't worry!

You will go back, one day.

the couple we went with last year flew out to it again today with their kids 17th year out of 20

Mrs Moon and me have done 10's of Greek Islands for holidays, most very nice but after discovering Skala four years ago we always make a trip to the Island yearly at the end of the season and stay a little out of town. The 30 min walk is lovely in October but would be evil at this time of year.

Off to Rhodes tomorrow for our first visit if it's half as good as Kefalonia I'll be well chuffed.

Gorgeous place - went about 15 years ago, before it gained popularity after being the setting for the movie 'Captain Correlli' s Mandolin'

Much of it is relatively modern as it was seriously flattened by a major earthquake in the early 1950's, with the exception of Fiskardo at the Northern tip - From there we hired a little motor boat for the afternoon and nipped accross to the tiny neighbouring island of Itheka

We were based in the South at a little place called Zvoranata, which despite its location about 5 minutes away from the airport was really peaceful as there were only flights coming in and out for 2 days of the week

Highlight for me was the local grub - Great if you like seafood and the local lamb - plenty of local tavernas dotted all over the place

Well worth hiring a Jeep for at least part of your stay as most places on the Island will be accessible within an hour or so, no matter where you happen to be based

Have a good one

Lindos is great....but hit the beaches during the day, as day trippers pack the tiny streets then....St Paul's Bay is best beach for us....
