Keir Starmer

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.

The poster I was replying to is one of those decrying the inquiry as an enterprise of the loony left and people playing politics. They seem to think the disparity in how groups are being affected can be easily explained away an no inquiry is necessary.

My point is that any factors that we are considering have obviously been considered by medical experts and the government too. These factors aren't explaining the whole story, hence the need for an inquiry now in the hope we can get answers now and help bring the situation under control more quickly for EVERYONE'S benefit.

I just find it crazy that the posters on here who seem to have the problem with the inquiry (that they are still weirdly pinning solely on the labour party) think they can explain it away in a couple of sentences and undermine the need for it.

Social class, geographical distribution around the country, predisposition to certain medical conditions and make up of the work force are ALL at play and have been openly acknowledged/discussed in the press and by members of the medical community. There are other missing pieces in the jigsaw though and it would be good for everyone if we could understand them more.

Can we have it this afternoon?

You do know the government has launched an inquiry into it don't you? It wasnt just Labour asking for it.

The British Medical Association have asked for it as they're alarmed by the statistics and believe there may be other reasons that could be addressed now to protect people and save lives. The make up of the workforce does not "mostly" explain the statistics at all. It explains some of it. The government are concerned by it too hence their decison to launch an inquiry two weeks ago.

Understanding why different groups are suffering in a wildly disproportionate way IS part and parcel of dealing with the virus.

Asking why BAME people are suffering disproportionately doesn't suggest racism is at play. Ignoring the problem would be though.

Who suggested racism was in play?

Why would you post something like this?

You stated that it's most likely to be social class why more BAME are dying tho most of the doctors and nurses that are dying are BAME that goes against your theory, I'm more of the theory that its a vitamin D or genetics thing as with sickle cell and diabetes, the first only affecting black people and the latter more prevalent in asians. I have a fear that BAME are more susceptible because of their genetic makeup, This shitty virus kills all social classes the question of why more BAME is and should be addressed, no doubt the scientist will work this out act accordingly and inform the public of their findings.

Your three mates you were chatting to and in agreement with.

Anyway, maybe we should continue this conversation in the conservative party thread given they are actually in government and launched the official inquiry into the matter a fortnight ago. You can tell us a bit more about how they are trapped in a bubble the rest of us find quite absurd.

What’s the thread title? In your angst you have failed to recognise the meaning of the post and why it was directed at Starmer and Labour. The ins and outs of why Bame have higher death rates even though demographics stand out like a sore thumb are not relevant. When an enquiry takes place is also not relevant.

There are certain anomalies with the virus and Labour have jumped on and shouted loudest about the one they always do. It has nothing to do with racism or a dismissal of the problem. But with you being a bit stupid you piled in. I can see why you might be fond of the current Labour Party. Shame not many others are sunshine:-)

I can assure you the only person that sounds stupid here is you.

If there are behavioural elements at play we can change people's behaviour now and save lives now. The BMA have already suggested some of this is behavioural.

Again, I don't know why you're limiting your attacks on this to Labour when the conservative government launched an inquiry two weeks ago.

People are asking why black and ethnic minorities are dying in highly disproportionate numbers. People think we can save lives by answering those questions. You don't want us to look into it and are weirdly taking aim at the opposition over it. You seem to have conducted your own inquiry and have concluded the explanation is "certain anomalies" and we can leave it at that that. You sound ignorant and weird.

You're probably right.
My daughter also says those with blood type A+ are more likely to get seriously ill than other blood types. It's not causation but definately correlation to some underlying genetic factor - o matter the race of the patient.
There's also the fact that the BAME population in the most densly populated areas in UK cities is between 25% and 38%. Population density is clearly one of the biggest factors in the spread of this disease in a country.

Why have Labour asked for a inquiry when as you say the government launched one 2 weeks ago, seems very much like virtue signaling from Labour.

Torys 'we have launched an inquiry into the disproportionate number of the BAME community dying of Covid'

The British public 'good it needs looking at'

Labour 2 weeks later 'we demand an inquiry as to why a disproportionate number of the BAME community are dying from Covid'

The British public 'Eh'

I am limiting my attacks to Labour because this is a Labour thread. I shall repeat again this is a Labour thread. Just to summarise this is a Labour thread. Has this now sunk in.

I give the Tories plenty of shit on the corona thread. I also never said no one should look into it. Stop lying mucker. My point was it was a typical Labour response by jumping on this issue early and hard but you are too daft to understand or prefer not to.

Now if you don't mind don't bother replying I'm not into further discussions with biased stupid planks.

Have a good evening.

You've had a howler today. Hope you have a good evening too.

Labour haven't jumped onto it two weeks later. They've also been looking into it throughout. I just think anybody who wanted to use this as a stick to beat labour with should probably drop it now as they're barking up the wrong tree.

BAME people are dying disproportionately and we can't fully explain it. Therefore an inquiry is taking place and hopefully we will learn something that will help us all. That's the long and the short of it. Nothing to attack any political party or Kier Starmer over. There is cross party agreement and agreement in the medical community that this needs to happen. People on here flew off the handle without looking into the facts. I can say with some certainty they didn't look into the facts before they spoke and i think it's weird they would do that.

"And while some of these figures may be explained in part by the fact that among BAME communities a large number have felt a vocational calling to the caring professions, it doesn’t account for the massive disparity in fatalities. Is part of the reason medical, possibly related to higher blood pressure and diabetes rates among ethnic minorities? Just as important, is it partly due to socio-economic reasons, related to poverty and lack of access to healthcare?"

The BMA also suggested that BAME workers could feel less confident/empowered raising concerns over safety. I have no idea if that's true but I guess the BMA have a better idea than I do. There are lots of angles to be examined and hopefully an inquiry will be a useful exercise.

Best explanation I've heard is it's to do with vitamin d giving higher respiratory tract immunity and people with dark skin don't produce enough vitamin d naturally. It'll be interesting to see if gingers are similarly affected as they can't tolerate enough sunlight to make vitamin d. If it turns out COVID has unfairly gone after BAME and the gingers then we can probably draw the conclusion that this virus is a racist.

Daywalkers have an evolutionary genetic advantage, they only need to glance at a light bulb to produce sufficient vitamin D.

Lets hope so. Do you need a soul to convert sunlight to vitamin D? I'm going to go outside at 8:00pm tomorrow and clap to show my appreciation to gingers. I know the clocks have changed and the days are longer, but hopefully it will be dark enough for the gingers to come out and see our show of solidarity.
