Keir Starmer

In normal political times, Sir Kier is nowhere near the leadership of the party imo, never mind being PM but these are not normal times.

He is up against nothing either internally or the Tory party.

I will happily vote for the man to get rid of this awful government but I don’t do it expecting great things from him unfortunately.
Settle for safe,sensible,boring.
It'll make a pleasant change.

Trouble is after the wrecking ball has finished doing it's worst we are going to need more than to just steady the ship. It's a rebuilding job in tough times and we'll need someone who can set out a vision and convince enough of the population to stick with them for more than one term. Hope he's up to it and the public don't have short memories which we too often do. Personal preference would be someone to change the electoral system to he more democratic and that doesn't appear to be Starmer.

The trouble is that even Houdini would struggle to get us out of this current mess so like you I'm not expecting miracles from Starmer but what he will surely do is make things fairer for the vast majority of us. As a starting point, we need that and a fair bit of commonsense - something which is totally lacking in the current government.

That generally seems to be his plan. Some complain he's dull, but at least he's not Truss.

all along I have said his approach was not to intervene when his opponent was making mistakes. He could not have dreamed that they would go this far though - he must be looking forward to next weeks conference way more than Truss lol

Yes, the lies and self-interest of the Conservatives were clearly eating themselves and giving them a target to unite against would have been a bad idea.

It'll be a long time yet before the govt change, well unless they do something else lunatic. I'm not sure on how the backbenchers remove Truss, but I'd imagine that 50 of them writing to Brady would make it a fait accomplit.

Apologies if this has been discussed previously as it happened months ago, but I've only just listened to the James O'Brien Full Disclosure Podcast with Starmer. https://player.fm/series/full-disclosure-with-james-obrien/keir-starmer To put it in context he's being thrown soft balls by O'Brien and there's clearly a supportive audience in the room but it's quite a fascinating listen.

He's much more open, authentic and warmer than anything else I've heard from him.
Classic working-class grammar schoolboy made good, for better and for worse; but as a background to understand a decent swath of the people of this country he's light years ahead of the current loons.
I would have said prior to listening to this he was incapable of creating a narrative that genuinely connected with people, now I'm not so sure. I think they are worried that if he's authentic he'll be viewed too much the swotty, earnest kid and that'll put people off, but I'm not so sure given the current shitshow. Maybe he needs a pipe like Wilson?

As one of many who have listened to Starmer over the years, it‘s been plain to see that he has the down to earth bloke about him. Nobody wanted to hear him though as they were either still angry with the Corbyn situation, seen him as the next Blair ‘Warmonger’ or were still to besotted with Johnson.

Nobody really listens until it affects them, that’s what we are seeing now.

Or bought in the lies he protected nonces etc.
Still shake my head over people who think he was/is [INCOMING BINGO] 'part of the Metropolitan Elite' so plumped for work class hero De Pfeffel...
