Keir Starmer

Looks like a poor night for Starmer, a few decent results but not a real breakthrough up against the worst government in my lifetime
Seems to be a morning where everyone has something to be pleased about but nothing seismic. It’s still rather early to say anything definitive, but I suspect ‘opposition’ parties are going to have to be more explicit about their intention to collaborate if they want to defeat the Conservatives in a General Election.

Yeah, that’s how it see it - opposition has done well but is going to need to cooperate/partner if they want to return to power. Which is pretty much my ideal scenario - predominantly labour social policies with a smattering of PR for the LDs and some positive environmental commitments for the Greens. I can but dream.

Going to be difficult for them to manage both how it is done and how they manage expectations within their respective parties, but if they don’t do it, then the Conservatives may yet survive. Question is whether the parties ’combined’ can convince enough of the electorate to vote tactically if it is not explicit.

Totally. They need to swallow their pride and say we’re running on an anti-Tory ticket first and foremost that will see commitments to X,Y and Z. I doubt it will happen but I don’t see another way to get rid of this shower.

That would take some serious work, however, and the question of Europe would likely resurface. The Conservatives will decry any such coalition as an attempt to reverse Brexit, and for many that voted for it, they might be convinced that it’s just a plan to take that away from them. Rather than address that problem, the opposition parties might just prefer to pretend there is no such collaboration and hope that enough people buy into the idea of voting against something as opposed to for something.

i think that would be a bad move for both the Lib Dems and Labour. I like that the Lib Dems have separate policies to Labour, particularly at local level. If they basically combine with Labour I wouldn’t vote for them - I don’t like Labour.

for me it would be Labour admitting they can’t win on their own. Terrible government, but still can’t win. That’s not a great look
