Keir Starmer

Different era Bob. No denying that factionalism is standard operating procedure in the Labour party but in the heady days of the 90's they won majorities with Benn, Corbyn, Galloway, Abbott and numerous others within their ranks. A broad church if you like. These days you get binned for sharing a platform with Ken Loach or liking a tweet.

So where does this standard operating procedure lead to when they've purged all the obvious targets and are left fighting among themselves? Not stable and competent government is my prediction. The knives will be out on Starmer within 2 years and they will be coming from the right.

And if Labour are elected with 400 odd MPs it’s still going to be a broad church and likely to have the biggest proportion of Muslim MPs of any ruling party in Europe and that will have an influence whether Starmer likes it or not.

All big parties have factions - wet and dries, left and right, one nation Tories and ERG and all these factions at various points gain the ascendency and impose their will and their preferred people in positions of power. This is nothing new; nor, unfortunately, are the wounded egos vowing to stand as independents as if this fucking election was solely about then and their precious beliefs. Personally, I find it tedious, tone deaf and immature. To be honest, it also sums up this thread at times.

I have often seen this balance from you before with other parties, they are a broad church you shout, so what if some including the leader support starving kids you cry, turn off electricity ? seems fair enough you muse, kick out a Lefty bring in a racist what's the problem you state.

Broad church in terms of political thinking not counting up minorities. By your reckoning you could argue the Tory front bench of recent years was a broad church.
