End of an era for me.
My parents are in their early 90's/late 80's, and their radio never moved from R2. Up until he moved to TV (full time) I did indeed Wake up to Wogan. In my early teenage years, I discovered my own tastes, so I never heard R2 for about 15 years.
One day in 2000, I was rang by my boss to go and do some emergency work at another site, so I jumped into a company car. His radio preset was radio 2. Straight away, my shoulders slumped, but they were playing Blondie.....I kept it on.
Driving back, I heard the Quo, the Beatles, Carpenters, David Gray, etc. I thought I'd give R2 a try. I did, and I've not looked back
I can appreciate things change, and people get pissed off with musical tastes affecting a radio station's output, BUT, this has gone TOO far, now. My parents are probably pissed off that Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Gilbert O'Sullivan etc are hardly played anymore, but they get played occasionally, just like the music I grew up with (I'm 53), but 70's and 80's stuff are literally avoided like the plague, so we can be bombarded by stuff that's not "cool" enough for R1, anymore. Why the fuck do R2 play "music" by Stormzy?... that's R1's remit.
Bar 10 minutes of Tony Blackburn, driving to work on the odd Saturday morning, and a bit of Paul Gambaccini, a few hours later, my radio won't have R2 on again. I'm sick to death of whiny 20something girls who are ditching their fellas because he's still seeing his ex .
Ken Bruce.
The last "proper" 5 day a week DJ on R2 has gone. Thanks for my 2 digital radios on Popmaster.
LEGEND.
See you on GHR
