Believe it or not sprout it's been impossible up until recently to root a fire device as Amazon have been pretty determined to stop it; but you're right,as long as you can get Kodi on it there's not a desperate need for it right now :)fire tv boxes can be rooted. sticks....its android, its linux, it's possible, it's not needed
